President’s Message
JustreturningfromAalborg,Denmark,wherewecelebratedthis
year’sEUSIPCOwithanoutstandingprogramandfantasticple-
nary talks. The free tutorials offered were visited by more than
300people;alltogethersome550peopleparticipated.Thehos-
pitalityduringtheconferenceandinparticularthehighlight,the
Banquet Dinner with musical support will remain in memory
foralongtime.ManythanksfromEURASIPtotheorganizers,
inparticularSorenJensenwhodidaperfectjob.
Two years have rushed by since I started my presidency term.
Manythingshavehappenedsincethen.Weinitiatedthelocalli-
aison program, lead by Ana Perez with more than 50 so-called
EURASIPofficers.Thisbroughtinalotofmorelivelyactivitiesinthecommunityasthey
are mostly younger colleagues who are still full of new ideas and have the energy to turn
themintosomethinguseful.AndwhatbetterplaceistherethanEURASIPfortryingnew
idea.ItinspiredalotofoneandtwodayEURASIPworkshopstowhichEURASIPoffered
not only logistical but even financial help. By such events many outstanding people like
Simon Haykin, Josef Kittler (EURASIP Fellow 2009), or Georgios Giannakis (EURASIP
Fellow2008)wereseenandheardbymanypeopleofourcommunity.
Other efforts are related to our databases and web appearance to which Aggelos Pikrakis
devotedalotofhistime.Here,wehaveimprovedourgeneralwebappearanceandinpar-
ticulartheEURASIPOpenLibrary.Itismucheasiernowtofindpapersforspecificevents
and all EUSIPCOs from the very beginning on in 1980 have been included. We provide
monthlydownloadfiguresanditismostimpressivetoseesomepapersbeingdownloaded
some200–300timespermonth.
RelatedtothisisourEURASIPPhDRepositorytowhicheverybodyisinvitedtoprovidea
pdfcopyofherorhisthesis,provideditiswritteninsomeEuropeanlanguage.Similarto
theEURASIPOpenLibraryweprovidedownloadnumbersonamonthlybasisandsome
thesis is being downloaded nearly 1000 times over the year! To further promote this we
announcetheEURASIPPhDawardinthisissue.
Anewservicejuststarted,theEURASIPJobPostwhereeveryonecanenterjobsofferedor
lookingfor,nomatterifitisinacademiaorindustry.Wehopethatthisservicewillalsobe
takenonmoreasitisagreatplatformtorecruitingsignalprocessingexperts.
Nowitistimetoendmytermbyendofthisyear,resignfrommy(BoD)BoardofDirector’s
seatandtakeonthecozyseatofapastpresidentthatisalreadywaitingforme.Ihavefound
theworkforEURASIPverychallengingand rewardingand Iamgratefulforbeing given

theopportunitytoserveasPresident.EURASIPasafullyvolunteersocietywillremainin
my memory as a great European asset. I would like to take the opportunity thanking all
thewonderfulpeopleofEURASIPwhoIhadthechancetoworkwithfortheirenduring
support,inparticularBeatricePesquet-Popescu,andBulentSankurwhosefouryearterm
in the Board of Directors ends this year. This is also the right time to welcome the new
membersoftheBoD,MariaPaulaQueluzfromPortugal,AggelosPikrakisfromGreeceand
JeanLucDugelayfromFrance.BythisselectionofpeopletheBoDwillremainaverygood
reflectionofEurope.IwishyouallasmuchfortuneasIhadinsolvingtheproblemsahead
ofyou.
Finally,inthislastEURASIPNewsletteroftheyearIshouldalsoinviteallourmembersto
renewtheirmembership.Ourmembershipfeeshavebeenkeptatthesamelevelaslastyears.

AmongseveralactivitiesofEURASIPthetwomajoronesareConferencesandJournalpub-
lications. If the conference activities are crowned by the yearly EUSIPCO: European Sig-
nal Processing Conferences, the publication activities are crowned by the decuple of the
EURASIPjournals.
ThesetenEURASIPjournalsaresteadilygrowingbothinqualityandquantity.Thenum-
bersbelowinTable1attestforthisgrowth.Belowisabriefoverviewandfirst-handstate-

The monthly full-text HTML pages view statistics is approximately double that number,
andamounttoaboutthreemillionpageviewsperyear.
EURASIPjournalsvieforhigherqualityandoneindicationamongothersistheacceptance
rates.Ontheaverageonlyoneouteverythreesubmittedpapersisacceptedforpublication.
Anotherimportantmetricisthetimelinessofthereviewandeditorialprocess,thatis,the
numberofdaysittakesfromitsfirstsubmissiondaytothefinalacceptance.Bothfigures
