Substanceandrange,companionablylivedandshared.Thatistheraregiftwe
have received from Marcia Hall over the last four decades. The questions she
has posed don’t settle for easy answers. Does a work of art stand alone? What
happenswhenworksofartareconfiguredasensembles?Whatdoeseachwork
contributeandwhatcomesfromthegrouping?Howdoesthechorustheypro-
duceresonateinaspaceshapedbyritual,belief,anddesire?Intheirmostab-
stract form, these are the questions that drove the 1979 book based on her
doctoraldissertation,RenovationandCounter-Reformation:VasariandDukeCo-
simoinSantaMariaNovellaandSantaCroce,1565–1577.
That book formed the basis of an inquiry that would animate Hall’s work
over the next decades. What is the threshold between the work and the world,
and how is meaning produced at that threshold? A child of the 1960s, Marcia
Hallunderstoodfromthebeginningthatnoworkcomesasacompleteandself-
sufficient package, yet at the same time she never believed that all meaning is
brought to and out of the work by external agents and institutions. She has al-
waysworkedfromwhattheworksofartoffertotheirenvironments,trackingthe
ways these affordances were taken up by conscious actors – viewers, patrons,
and,oftenenough,otherartists.Howdoespaintingperformtraditionalreligious
functionsevenasitundergoesradicalchange?HowdidItalianpaintersrespond
tothedebatesoverimagesthatprevailedinthesixteenthcentury,andtoprevi-
ouspictorialresponses?Theselargequestionscomedown,forMarciaHall,tothe
dilemmasfacedbypainterswhenimaginingandthenfillingthesurfacesofpan-
els,canvases,andwalls.Howdoesaworkmanagethepowerofcolorinsucha
wayastoreinforceorcomplicatethemessagesofcompositionandgesture?How
does a work’s conversation with other artworks, recent and not so recent, reso-
natewithitsothertasks?Areworksofanadvanced,theorizedartisticculturede-
signed for viewers of different kinds? Are all levels of an artwork’s operation
availabletoallviewers?
The array of essays assembled in this volume attest to the substance and
rangeofMarciaHall’swork,andtheongoingvitalityofitsimpact.Mostofthe
time, gifts beget other gifts, unfolding onwards and outwards in a widening
field. This volume is a moment of gathering and acknowledgment, a bouquet
offeredbacktoabelovedteacherandwriter.

church’sspatialinterior,thefactureandaffectivityofthealtarpiece,andthecon-
troversyoverimagesbeforeandaftertheCouncilofTrent.Space,Image,andRe-
form addresses Marcia Hall’s important work. Although numerous studies now
engagetheseissuesregularly,thisvolumeaccruestheadvantagesofasinglepar-
adigmtobetterassesstheapplicabilityandrangeofhercontributionstoarthis-
tory.BringingtogetheranumberofpaperstoengageHall’sworkandrelateitto
new areas of study, this volume pushes her investigation of the image further
backintime,furtherafield,anddeeperintofamiliartopics.Eachchapterofthe
bookbrieflyrelatesHall’sworktothetopicitaddresses,thusachievingacompre-
hensiveness,cohesion,andbroadappealnotusuallypresentineditedvolumes.
