Knowledge as Virtuality, Virtual Knowledge
Ascientificpublicationwhichhasasitsaimthestudyofthevirtualimaginarycan
be described, alternatively, as a parcour from pre- to postimagination, going
through fiction. And this because any sincere architect knows that the vision of a
futurebuilding(reconstructionorconstruction)isfiction,whereasanyarthistorian
knowsthatwhenlookingatanartvolume,inanyshape,itistheviewer’sdutyto
delineatethecriticaljudgementofthethroughlayersoftechniqueinvolvedwhich
aretobe‘received’inthesameimage(theartist,thephotographer,theeditor).
Thediscourseonthevalueofsuchaneventdedicatedtovirtualityisthusbased
ontheresearchoftheassociatedprofessionalethics.
Because we apply to a reality the emergence and existence conditions, we
always only partially master the logical argument and the good intentions of (re)
discoveringthetruth.itisalmostimpossibletoknowtheexactdateofthestartor
finish of an exedra, the historical, social, or architectural commands under which
these moments would have happened. We can study it on the basis of some
architectural or archaeological remains; we can place it in a context about which
weknowthemostdatapossible;wecanconnectitwiththewishofaffirmationof
thisorthoseseniororcardinal,thenameofacraftsman,architect,orworkteam,or
wecanreportit,onthebasisofsomesizeordersoraestheticalapproachofagiven
stylisticarch.Weconstruct,thus,avirtualimagewhichwewishtocontain,finally,
asfewunknowns aspossible.Let’sadmitthat,veryprobably,thisistheimageof
the science in becoming, in evolution, an action which has as a goal results as
preciseaspossible,obtainedthroughrepetitiveactions,known,andthroughtheas
drasticallyaspossible,limitofvariables.
Isit,inthissense,thevirtualimage,the2Dor3Drepresentation,atoolorcanit
bealso‘reality’,a‘goal’initself?
In other words, is it auxiliary or autoreferential from the point of view of the
scientific?WhenaprojectisconstructedviatheInternetbyteamssituatedonfour

continents, in realtime, very probably the idea becomes concept at the same time
withitswholevirtual‘meat’,whichgivesthefreedomofbeingtotheallpossible.
Thefinaledificewillbe,moreorless,‘travelled’builtfiction–saidinotherwords–
thestructureofsuchahouseisthatofthevirtualwhichisimagined,constructed,at
thelimit‘itthinksaboutitself’.Whereas,evidently,whenwereconstructthefac¸ade
ofagivenpalace,thedigitaltechniquecansetasanaimatmosttomergewiththe
existing real, on which it folds and which it models. A model through which one
sees and that allows the reading of more layers of reality is, in any case it is
considered, an instrument that can offer openings, multiple and extensive under-
standingsofthearchitecturalact.
The17chaptersofthisbookcontain,moreorless,‘options’ofthetwo‘extreme’
projections,suspendedarchitectureswhichcausingusaa-tectonicthought,cover-
ing large intellectual spaces, from the basic mnemonic function to the launch of
incisive paradoxical discourses on the concrete, the reality, the vision, the trans-
formationofthecity,thepeople,life.Anyofthesehavetobeseen,aswesuggested
atthebeginningoftheserows,asprofessionalchallengeswhichaffect,inanycase,
the ethics and aesthetics of the arts among which we live or which we inhabit.
Interdisciplinarilyspeaking,wecanseetheseresearchersofthepossibleprojections
asprobeinstrumentsofthe‘lawsofthebigcathedral’,asauxiliaoftherestoration
of the ideal truth of space–time, as history shows itself, in most of the cases,
reconstruction. The real progress of the discipline of architecture, of ‘humanities’
seems to be done, following Einstein’s saying, more following the seduction of
imaginationthantherulesofapplied,insularknowledge.

This book is written at the close of the Network for Digital Methods in Arts and
Humanities(acronymNeDiMAH)Research NetworkingProgrammecofundedby
theEuropeanScienceFoundationandby17ESFMemberOrganisationsin16ESF
member countries, among which is the National Research Council (CNCS) for
Romania,withtheprojectnumber25-RNP.Thebookisaneffortoftheeditors,of
whomthefirstisthesteering committeememberforRomaniainthenetworkand
thesecondisahierarchicalsuperiorattheorganisationrepresented,togatherviews
related to the Romanian contribution to the network. The position of Romania is
special as the majority of the other members worked with text, whereas Romania
focused onthe part dedicated toimages. The‘IonMincu’UniversityofArchitec-
ture and Urbanism, which the editors represent, is classified in Romania as a
university of arts. The doctoral school of the university deals with both aspects,
text and image, the image part being that of the representation of architecture.
Thereforethebookshowstheimportanceofdigitalmethodsforthestudyofimage
asameansofrepresentationinarchitectureandurbanplanning.Theintroductionof
the book gives an overview of the Romanian NeDiMAH activities, and in the
conclusions the theoretical framework of these means is drawn on the basis of
this experience and on the invited opinion of the experts who contributed to the
book.TheexpertswerenotallinvolvedinNeDiMAHactivities,butarerelatedto
aspectscoveredbytheRomaniancontributionaspresented.
