and eastern Bass Straits, and Wilsons Promontory

Abstract
Nineteen speciesoflandslaters (Isopoda: Oniscoidea),twoofwhichareexotics,arerecorded forTasmanian
islandsofBanksandeasternBassStraits.Specimenswereobtainedfrom37ofthe100visitedislands.Sixofthe
nativespecieshavebeenfoundonlyon theeastern islandstodate. Onetaxonisknown fromjust Deal Island
andWilsons Promonlory. Another is knownwith certaintyfrom two islands and there is a possible record
ofit forWilsons Promontory. Twoslaters, formerly thoughtto beTasmanianendemics,are recordedforthe
hrsttimeontheAustralianmainland,atWilsons Promontory.Commentsaremadeonthe habitatofsomeof
the species, andtherangeandextentofthecollecting.'Ihedistributionofseveralspecies,and theirprobable

Introduction

GENUS PAROPSIS
Thisgenuscontainsagreaternumberofspecies than anyothergenusofAustraliancoleoptera. Theyare
robust,veryconvex,smoothbeetlesofrounded oval form,andare foundusuallyclingingto theleavesof
lowbushes, the shoots or suckers ofeucalypts are especiallyfavoured by them. Many ofthe species are
beautifullycoloured,butoftenthebrightcoloursfadeentirelyafterdeath,becomingadullyelloworbrown.
