Abstract Twonewspecies,Cychrusz:hotanovandCychrusokamotoinov.,are
describedfromcentral Sichuan,China. Aphylogenetictreeisconstructed forthenew
speciestogetherwithCychrusthibetanusandCychropsisdraco1,1s,bothfromSichuan,and
Cych,・us,no,-awitzi fromHokkaido, Japan, based on themitochondrial ND5 genese-
quences.
IntheSine-JapaneseCooperativeExpedition to theFengtongzhaiNatureProtec-
tiveAreaofcentralSichuan,China,madeinJuneof1997,wecollected fourcychrine
species,ofwhichtwoCychrusspecieshavebeenrecognizedasnewtoscienceandare
describedinthispaper.TwootherspecieshavebeenidentifiedwithCychrusthibetanus
andCychropsisdraconls, respectively.Aphylogenetictreehasbeenconstructed from
themitochondrial ND5genesequencesof these four species togetherwith Cychrus
morawitzi fromHokkaido,Japan,andseveralrepresentativespeciesbelongingtothe
tribeCarabini.
Materialsand Methods
For theanalyticalmethodsofthemitochondrial ND5genesequences, andcon-
structionoftheNJphylogenetictree,seeSUetal.(1996a,b)andIMURAeta1.(l997).

Fengtongzhai, butmorphologically distinguishable from it by the following points:
1) mandiblesa littleshorter andmorestrongly arcuate inwards; 2) labrum a little
shorterandrobuster;3)lateralmarginsofpronotumhardlyreflexedaboveintheposte-
riorportions,withthree(onleftside)ortwo(onrightside)marginalsetae(onlyasin-
glesetaonbothsidesinC.wuvlpeng);4)elytraalittleslenderer,theirshouldersmore
effaced,withthediscsmorestronglyconvexaboveandmoreremarkablyuneveninthe
sculptural condition;5)malegenitaliamorestronglycurvedventradin lateral view,
withtheaedeagalapexmoresharplypointedindorsalview.

granules(theyarecomposedofrowsofpuncturesinC bt-ezina1).

Notes. ThisspecieswasdescribedbyDEuvEfromSongpanXianofN.Sichuan,
andwassubsequentlyrecordedbythesameauthor fromWo1ongofthecentralpartof
thesameprovince. 0ur specimen from Fengtongzhai seems to be identical with
DEUvE'sspecies, thoughbearingalittlemoregentlyroundedaedeaga1apex indorsal
view.
EvolutionaryConsiderations
ThetopologyonthephylogenetictreeoftheCychrini, theCalosominaandthe
Carabinaisunchanged fromthatreportedbySuetal. (l996a)byadditionofthese-
quencesanalysedinthisstudy.
Fourcychrinespeciestreatedin thisstudy andCvchrtlsmo,・a- tz1fromJapan
constituteaclearmonophyleticcluster.Cych,-opslsd1-aconissharesthecommonances-
trywithallotherCvchrusspecies.Thefollowingthreefactsshouldbenoted:- 1)The
originoftheCychrini isoldandtheCychrini formsanoutgroupoftheCarabini;2)
Diversificationofthecychrinespeciesexaminedstartedsomewhatbeforeanexplosive
radiationofthemajorcarabinegroups(3-40Myrago;seeSuetal., l996a,b);3)The
branchingpointsofallthespeciesareverydeep.Despitesuchlonghistoriesofthecy-
chrineevolution, the fundamentalmorphology hasnotchange(i, incontrast toare-
markablemorphologicaldiversification intheCarabina.Cychruszhou1nov andCy.
okamoto1nov. were collectedat thesamesite,and yet theseparationof thesetwo
speciestookplacelongtimeago.Thissuggeststhatthesesympatrica11yoccurringtwo
specieshavebeenreproductively isolatedforalongtimewithonlyasmallmorpholog-
ical diversification.

,: JI:村有希・蘇 智1ｷ・ 大 等1省三 中 国四川省のセダカオサ シ族; 2 新種の記載と同族の
化に関する考察. - JT生命誌研究館と中国科学院動物研究所との合同調査により得られた
オサムシ類のなかに, セダカオサムシ属の2新種をみいだしたので, それぞれにチュウセダカ
オサムシCycht-us houinov.およびオカモトセダカオサムシCv.okamoto1nov.という新名を与えて
記破した. 同時に得られたチベットセダカオサムシCy thibetanusと別属のタツノコニセセダカ
オサムシCychropsisdracon,s, ならびに日本産のセダカオサムシCychrusn・10・,au,1tziとともに, ミ
トコンドリアND5過一伝子のDNA塩基配列を決定し, 分子系統樹を作成して, その進化の過程
に関する検討を行ったところ, つぎのような結論が得られた: l) セダカオサムシ族の起源は
古く, 分子系統上, オサムシ族の外群を形成する; 2) その分化はオサムシ族の一斉放散より
もやや古い時代に起きたものと推定される; 3) 各種間の分岐が非常に深いにもかかわらず,
同族内における基本的形態の変化はオサムシ族のそれに比べてはるかに小さい.
