About the Special Issue Editor
JoannesChliaoutakis(MSc, PhD).HeisanEmeritusProfessorofsociologyattheDepartmentof
SocialWorkoftheHellenicMediterraneanUniversity(HMU)andresearcherintheLaboratoryof
Health and Road Safety. He served as the Head of the Department of Social Work from 2004 till
2006. Since2009,hehasbeentheHeadoftheSchoolofHealthandSocialWelfareSciences,HMUin
Crete. Since2005, hehasbeenamemberoftheExecutiveBoardoftheMaster’sDegreeProgram
“Environmental & Occupational Health-Management & Financial Assessment” organized by the
MedicalSchool,UniversityofAthens.Since1988,hehasworkedasaresearcherintheGreekInstitute
ofChildHealth,the-ECproject,andtheEuropeanLongitudinalStudyofPregnancy&Childhood.
Hehaspublishedseveralpapersininternationalandnationalscientificjournalsinthefieldofroad
safety, sexual and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS and Assisted Reproductive Technologies. He
servedastheDirectorofStudiesfortheproject“Gender&Equity”oftheOperationalProgrammefor
EducationandInitialVocationalTraining(O.P.“Education”)from2005till2009.Recently,hehasbeen
involvedinvariousECprojectsconcerningsafedrivingbehaviour,e.g.theCOSTaction357Accident
Prevention Options with Motorcycle Helmets; the COST action TU1101 Helmet Optimization in
Europe; the three-year project titled “Reducing the harm and the burden of injuries and human
losscausedbyroadtrafficcrashesandaddressinginjurydemandsthrougheffectiveinterventions”
(asaCoordinator)carriedoutinGreece,GermanyandItalywithfundingbytheDGMobilityand
Transport(MOVE/C4/SUB/2011-294/SI2.628846/REHABIL-AID);theMOBIHAVEproject(theuse
ofmobilephoneswhiledriving,supportedbynationalfunds). Inaddition,hehasworkedonprojects
dealing with gender role and differences, e.g. the Youth Sexual Violence 2009 1222 (EAHC); and,
twoDAPHNEprojects(JUST/2011-2012/DAP/AG/3272andJUST/2011-2012/DAP/AG/3008)on
sexualharassmentandviolenceagainstwomen(intheoneasaCoordinator). Finally, hehasover50

Preface to ”Social Safety and Security”
As most experienced readers appreciate the international scientific review of Safety for its
uniqueperspectiveonvulnerableindividualsandrisk-relatedbehavioursinvariousmanifestations
ofourdailylife,wehaveorganizedthepublicationofaSpecialIssuethatfocusesonanumberof
contemporaryissuesinsocialsafetyandsecurity. Thispublicationprovidesthelatestresearchin
importantthematicareas,highlightingintimatepartnerviolenceagainstwomen,alcoholuse,inmate
sexualvictimizationofmalesduringincarceration,andtheutilityofmodernmodelstopredictthe
historyofarrestamongintimatepartnerviolentmen.Similarly,findingsarepresentedforvulnerable
individualsconcerningthechallengesoftheirsafetyandcommunityintegration. Withintheissue,
twokeypublicationsonroadsafetyshedlighton,first,thecomparisonofroadsafetystatusbetween
GreeceandNorway,andsecond,ontheevaluationofthedrivingfactorsindepression.
This publication begins, in Chapter 1, with investigating the predictors of intimate partner
violence against women in a sub-Saharan country experiencing a booming alcohol industry. In
Chapter2,thecrucialtopicofsexualvictimizationofavulnerablegroupinGreekprisonsisdiscussed
bypresentingfindingsfromarecentresearch. InChapter3,thepredictionofahistoryofarrestin
menwhoperpetrateintimatepartnerviolenceiscoveredusingnon-linearneuralnetworkmodels.
The4thchapterwaswrittentocapturethefindingsfromanexcitingcommunity-basedprojectto
createamorewelcomingandsafecommunityforallmembers,especiallymorevulnerablemembers
suchasthosewithdementiaand/oranintellectualdisability. Thenextcontribution,inChapter5,
isacross-culturalstudywhichcomparesroadsafetycultureamongprivateandprofessionaldrivers
insignificantlydifferentcontextsinNorwayandinGreece. InChapter6,thefocusshiftsondata
resultingfromadriversimulatorexperimentinGreeceevaluatingdrivingperformanceindepression
betweenpatientsandhealthydrivers.
Wehopethisworkwillbeofassistancetotheintendedaudience(researchersandpolicymakers)
tospurfutureresearchandbestpracticesintherespectiveareascovered.
