DangNguyenAnhistheViceDirectorforInternationalResearchCooper-
ation for the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences. Prior to assuming this
position, he was the Director of the Center for Population at the Institute
of Sociology in Hanoi. Anh’s research focuses on the determinants and
consequencesofmigrationinVietnam.
Arturo Baiocchi is a Sociology doctoral candidate at the University of
Minnesota. His past and ongoing work examines how notions of mental
healthareunderstoodandusedbydifferentsocialgroups.Arturoiscurrently
atrainingfellowsponsoredbytheNationalInstituteofMentalHealthand
theAmericanSociologicalAssociation.
Hans-PeterBlossfeldholdstheChairofSociologyIatBambergUniversity
and is the Director of the State Institute for Family Research at Bamberg
University. He has published 20 books and over 150 articles on social
inequality,youth,family,andeducationalsociology,labormarketresearch,
demography, social stratification and mobility, the modern methods of
quantitative social research and statistical methods for longitudinal data
analysis. He has directed several international comparative projects on
demography, family, work and education, among them the GLOBALIFE
project.Currently,heisinterestedintheflexibilizationofworkinmodern
societies,thedivisionofdomesticworkinthefamily,andthedevelopment
of individual competences and the formation of educational decisions in

Jochen Brandtstädter is Professor of Psychology at the University of Trier,
Germany. Substantive topics in his research include adult development,
actiontheory,theoreticalpsychology,developmentinpartnershiprelations,
self-regulatory processes, dynamics of goal commitment and disengage-
ment across adulthood and later life. He was Fellow at the Institute
for Advanced Study (Wissenschaftskolleg) Berlin (1983–84) and at the
CenterforAdvancedStudyintheBehavioralSciences,Stanford(1998–99);
his memberships include the European Academy of Sciences (Academia
Europaea)undtheGermanAcademyofSciencesLeopoldina.
Sandra Buchholz is a research scientist at the University of Bamberg,
Chair of Sociology I. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Bamberg
University (Dr rer. pol.). From 2003 to 2005, Buchholz served as a
research scientist in the international comparative GLOBALIFE project
at the Otto-Friedrich-University Bamberg. From 2005 to 2007, she was
working in the DFG-project ‘Flexibility Forms at Labor Market Entry
and in the Early Career’ (flexCAREER) at the State Institute for Fam-
ily Research at the University of Bamberg. She is interested in labor
market research, international comparison, life course research, industrial

Huichang Chen graduated from Shanghai Normal University with a MA.
He is currently a Professor at the Institute of Developmental Psychology,
BeijingNormalUniversity.HeisaRegionalCoordinatoroftheInternational
Society for the Study of Behavioral Development (ISSBD) and a Member
oftheExecutiveCommitteeofChinesePsychologicalSociety.Hisresearch
interests are mainly in children and adolescents’ social and emotional
development.
Xinyin Chen is Professor of Psychology at University of Western Ontario.
HereceivedaWilliamT.GrantScholarsAwardandseveralotheracademic
awards. He is interested in children’s socioemotional functioning and
relationships,withafocusoncross-culturalissues.Hehaseditedorco-edited
several books (e.g., Peer Relationships in Cultural Context, Socioemotional
Development in Cultural Context) and published over 100 journal articles
andbookchaptersaboutcultureanddevelopment.
JessicaHeckertisagraduatestudentinthedual-degreeprograminHuman
DevelopmentandFamilyStudiesandDemographyatthePennsylvaniaState
University,wherehercurrentresearchexaminestheexperiencesofchildren
and youth in developing countries. Prior to pursuing graduate studies, she
workedasayouthandcommunitydevelopmentspecialistintheDominican
RepublicandHaiti.

Behavior.Herresearchaddressestheroleofmotivationandcontrolstriving

2000, Jutta Heckhausen was a researcher at the Center for Life-Span

In 1995/96, she was a fellow at the Center for Social and Behavioral
Science at Stanford. In 2000, Jutta Heckhausen joined the Department of
PsychologyandSocialBehavioratUCIrvine.
Dirk Hofäcker is a research scientist at the University of Bamberg, Chair
of Sociology I and at the Institute for Family Research at the University of
Bamberg(ifb).From2002to2005,Hofäckerservedasaresearchscientistin
the international comparative GLOBALIFE project at the Otto-Friedrich-
University Bamberg. Since 2006 he holds a position as a researcher at
the ifb and is also the coordinator of the ESF-funded Research network
‘TransEurope.’ His interests are in family sociology, comparative labor
market research, life course research, attitudinal research and quantitative

Rukmalie Jayakody is the Associate Director of the Population Research
Institute and Associate Professor of Human Development at Pennsylvania
State University. Her research focuses broadly on the impacts of social
changes and the impacts of public policies. She has published widely on
public policy changes and family well-being in the U.S., as well as social
changesandtheirimpactsonfamiliesinVietnam.
Melvin L. Kohn is Professor of Sociology at the Johns Hopkins University,
USA. His research has mainly been in the field of social structure and
personality. In recent decades, this work has been almost entirely cross-
nationallycomparativeandcollaborative.HisprincipalbooksinEnglishare
Class and Conformity: A Study in Values (1969); Work and Personality:
AnInquiryintotheImpactofSocialStratification(1983,co-authoredwith
CarmiSchooler);SocialStructureandSelf-Direction:AComparativeAnal-
ysisoftheUnitedStatesandPoland(1990,co-authoredwithKazimierzM.
