We dedicate this book to the current generation of children who will be entering
our nation’s schools over the next 5 or 6 years. They live in a world challenged
with bewildering problems and astounding possibilities, and we trust that the
message of this book will be a positive influence for their benefit. We hope that
their generation will benefit from the current and future innovations in social and
emotional learning; that they will be resilient, well adjusted, and successful; and
that they will leave the world they have inherited in better shape than the one we
have left to them. Within this generation we particularly wish to single out some
special children in our own lives: Nicholas and Alexa (Barbara Gueldner’s nephew
and niece) and Madelynn (Kenneth Merrell’s granddaughter). May your dreams be

About the Authors
Kenneth W. Merrell, PhD, is Professor of School Psychology at the University of Oregon
in Eugene, where he has served as School Psychology Program Director and as head of the
Department of Special Education and Clinical Sciences. His research and clinical inter-
ests focus on social and emotional learning in schools and social– emotional assessment and
intervention with children and adolescents. He has authored numerous journal articles and
book chapters on these topics, as well as several books, assessment instruments, and inter-
vention programs. Dr. Merrell has extensive experience in working with children and youth
in school settings and in leading academic and research programs.
Barbara A. Gueldner, PhD, is a psychologist with Parker Pediatrics and Adolescents in the
greater Denver, Colorado, metro area. She has over a decade of experience working as a
school psychologist in the public school systems in Wisconsin and Oregon and with children
from infancy through young adulthood in pediatric primary care and intensive medical and
psychiatric inpatient care. Dr. Gueldner’s research and clinical interests comprise universal
prevention of and early intervention into children’s mental health concerns, issues in pedi-
atric psychology, consultation, and training mental health professionals. She has coauthored
several articles and book chapters on these topics and a social and emotional learning cur-
riculum for students.
