FOREWORD
Imagine a city colonized by its own economy, where power is diffuse but highly centralized. This city is wrapped as smooth as a vinyl texture map. The class structure 
and day­to­day business are highly ergonomic. They rely on easy listening surveillance, nothing more threatening—at first glance—than a beep from a remote control. 
The weather and the architecture offer no immediate threat, no sense of rifle sights aimed by lunatics at innocents on the street. In fact, at a glance, there is nothing 
more than the risk of a bad sunburn or an occasional mudslide. We can drive or navigate its "streets" without getting crushed by biker assassins from a Japanese 
animé. So we can assume that this site is by no means a dark cyberpunk world. You do not jack up sour memories like shooting with dirty needles. Nor is it an 
electrotopia, where everyone loves to talk digital and sleep near the warmth of their monitors. None of the easy tropes will serve here. Instead, a very different place 
emerges out of Peter Lunenfeld's encyclopedic journey in Snap to Grid.
When I say place, I suspect that the reader immediately assumes that I speak metaphorically, or "virtually," something about snapping into a grid along a z axis. But I 
refer more to the geopolitical culture, the background to Lunenfeld's survey, what makes Snap to Grid very much a look into where the next few decades will have to 
go. Peter Lunenfeld is one of the leading figures in an emerging digital theory in Southern California. He understands very well how the digital has already married into 
trillions of dollars of investment capital. He sees every day how this marriage has advanced into real space and into social imaginaries, like the global Los Angeles that 
is spread like a grand

catholicity across the world; in other words, into the transnational export of cinema and the new urban structures that fit so easily with the digitized corporation.
In Southern California, the long­term effects are already at work. There is very little need for post­structural theory to locate the political text hidden inside the 
inscrutable. This mess is as evident as a train roaring through a feudal village in 1880. In LA, one can see the epistemic sprawl as clearly as smog lifting every morning 
toward the San Gabriel Mountains. Media now have become the principal employer in LA—for the first time in the city's history. New systems for urban planning are 
full speed ahead, the "metropolitan suburb" bringing the same standard of latte to every town within two hundred miles.

This place is as clear to read, and as hypertextual as the Internet itself. Sometimes when I drive through LA, I think I am watching a gigantic autopsy, every incision a 
mile long. Every stage of digitally related production into real space, from design to final product, is incontestably noticeable. And Lunenfeld has made a point of 
studying each of these with boundless enthusiasm. I know, because I have tried to keep up with him through hours of conversation, ranging from urban history to film 
studies to graphic design, contemporary art, even the subcultures of local politics, from neighborhood to neighborhood—always returning to the digital world as well.
So what city am I referring to? It is the conjunction of the Web and digital city and the real spaces so obviously infected by something infinitely larger than any single 
medium or technology. It is the city that suits all these places at once, the city behind vapor theory, for digital dialecticians, for artists in every area. In Southern 
California, there is no art form imaginable that is not epistemically under shock from this new economy.
And yet, if you simply play the flâneur and try to read the surfaces themselves, they are just as elusively transparent as that vinyl texture map I mentioned earlier. You 
have to restore paradox to the discourse as much as possible, and invite all modes of visual and architectural production to invent new approaches. In short, this city is 
the "virtual" and the metro­suburban tourist chat world. The real space and the sim­space have met. We are witnessing a massive institution­building, not simply global 
capital accumulation. So indeed, it is time to integrate all the arts into any discussion of the digital. The "vapor" has spread beyond any of the older notions of digital 
theory.
This book takes the reader through dozens of sites informed by this highly expanded, advanced digital civilization. We are introduced to artists, technologies, and sites 
of production where much of the more advanced theory and work is being done. The paradoxes are emphasized, the older debates let go. Indeed, Lunenfeld has 
taken stock of what we find here in Southern California, in relation to the transnational culture. Snap to Grid goes from algorithm to architecture, from installation art 
to photography, to the process that must turn into praxis. It is something of an activist manual for art inside the city that

is both digital and in real space, highly internalized, but utterly globalized, Lunenfeld points to the site behind the crisis of "vapor" theory, toward what certainly is 
needed in its place.
