Executive Summary
• The 2022 Single-Family Builder Compensation Study provides information on the average sal-
ary, bonus, and fringe benefits for 39 common positions at single-family home building
companies. Results are broken down by region of the country and size of the builder (dollar
volume, starts, and number of employees).
• Nearly all single-family builders (94%) responding to the survey have a full-time President/
CEO; 50% have a full-time VP of Construction; 47% have a full-time Superintendent; and
29% have a full-time Bookkeeper. The remaining 35 positions exist as full-time jobs at less
than 40% of the responding firms.
• Builders were asked to report the annual salary and bonus/commission (if any) of each
position existing at their firm. To produce the average total compensation for each full-time
position, its average annual salary and average bonus/commission (computed among all
respondents reporting a salary for the position on a full-time basis) were combined.
• The top five highest average total compensation levels are:

• Builders were also asked about which of a list of 13 fringe benefits (health insurance, dental
insurance, vision program, prescription program, life insurance, short term disability, long
term disability, flex spending, 401K plan, paid vacation leave, paid sick leave, tuition reim-
bursement, and training) they offered to each of the positions existing at the firm.
• The two most-commonly offered benefits to full-time employees at single-family home
building companies are paid vacation leave and health insurance: at least 90% and 73% of
builders, respectively, offer those benefits to all the positions for which data can be calcu-
lated.
• The two least likely benefits builders offer their full-time employees are tuition reimburse-
ment and flex spending: at most 53% of builders offer those benefits to any of the positions
for which data can be calculated.

Chapter 1
Profile of Study Respondents
Like most other sectors of the American economy, the residential construction indus-
try has been severely affected by the turmoil brought about by COVID-19 to the labor
market. Since the onset of the pandemic, builders have had to adapt to office employees
increasingly working remotely and on a more flexible schedule. The pandemic also made
an ongoing, chronic shortage of skilled labor significantly worse, marked by an inde-
fatigable rise in the number of construction job openings. Throughout the economy and
across all sectors, millions of people have quit their jobs looking for better work-life bal-
ance, benefits, location, or pay — a phenomenon now commonly referred to as the Great
Resignation.
These serious challenges have rendered the recruitment and retention of human capital
a pressing objective for most businesses, one that will help determine their success in the
years ahead. For this reason, and in order to provide our members the tools they need to
run successful businesses, the National Association of Home Builders has produced new
industry standards on compensation and benefits for employees of single-family home
building companies.
In late 2021, the NAHB Economics and Housing Policy Group conducted a nationwide sur-
vey of single-family builders covering the most common 39 positions at these companies,
with the objective of producing industry benchmarks for salaries, bonuses/commissions,
and benefits. The survey was sent to a sample of 4,685 single-family builder members,
appropriately stratified to represent builders of different size categories (based on num-
ber of starts) and across the four Census regions of the country. A total of 338 responses
were received, for a response rate of 7.2%.
Chapters 1 through 4 will present a profile of the study respondents as well as in-depth
analysis of the compensation and benefit structure for each of the 39 jobs. Five appen-
dixes of detailed tables are also included, showing aggregate findings across all respon-
dents and also breakdowns by Census region, 2021 dollar volume, 2021 single-family
