Preface
The papers included in these proceedings were presented at the Seventeenth Annual
International ACM-SIGIR Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrie
val, held from July 3 to July 61993 in Dublin, Ireland. This conference alternates in location
between North America and Europe and this year is held in cooperation with the following
professional computing societies: ACM-SIGIR, AICA-GUR (Italy), CEPIS-EIRSG (Europe),
GI (Germany) and the Irish Computer Society. With 35 selected papers, 2 keynote talks, 2
panels, 8 tutorials, one ACM-SIGIR award paper and a series of demonstrations, this makes
this the biggest SIGIR conference to date.
The 35 selected papers included here were chosen from 129 submitted and all submissions
were reviewed by at least three referees from the programme committee. The programme
committee was actually composed of two subcommittees, one based in North America
chaired by Bruce Croft, the other based in Europe chaired by Keith van Rijsbergen. A meeting
was held in the United States and a selection of the best of the papers submitted to that
subcommittee was made. At a European meeting following that the final selection of papers,
panels and tutorials which comprise this conference, was made. These conference proceed
ings also include the paper presented by the recipient of the triennial ACM-SIGIR award.
The task of refereeing scientific papers is a demanding one for members of the programme
committee and the additional referees but the reward for all to see is a top class scientific
programme which makes the SIGIR conference the premiere meeting for the presentation of
results in research and development in information retrieval. The breadth of topics covered in
this years conference reflects the continued development and advancement of our field
within the scientific community.
We are very grateful to the School of Computer Applications at Dublin City University for
providing all kinds of resources and support in order to allow this conference to take place.
We also acknowledge the support of Bard Failte, Aer Lingus, the National Software
Directorate, the ESPRIT IDOMENEUS Network of Excellence and the Commission of the
European Communities.
This conference would have been impossible without the great deal of hard work done by
many volunteers including John Dunnion (Treasurer), Jennifer Pearson (panels and tutorials)
and Fergus Kelledy (local organisation). These and many others who gave freely of their time
have contributed much to making this conference a success.
