The first seeds for the development of this book were planted by our col-
league, Evelyn Blumenberg at UCLA. Her interest in the Las Vegas side-
walks kindled our eventual inquiry into sidewalks as distinct urban spaces.
We thank her for this and for allowing us to rework a co-authored piece to
include it in this book.

trols a¤ecting sidewalk uses.
Over the course of fieldwork and archival research we spoke with a
multitude of individuals about sidewalks—o‰cials in Public Works De-
partments and Bureaus of Street Services, representatives of Business Im-
provement Districts and business associations, homeless service providers,
community activists, and members of nonprofit organizations. They are
too many to list here, and some would not like to see their names in print,
but we wish to thank everyone in Boston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York,
and Seattle who took the time to talk with us about sidewalk activities and
controls in their cities.
