From Preliminary Design to Prototyping and Validation of Energy
Harvester for Shoes

Abstract Poweringaremotewirelesssensorisachallengingtaskifbatteriesarenotsuitableorenoughcapaciousandtheir
substitutionisnotfeasible.Inthisprojectaremotewirelesssensorisplacedinsidetrainingshoeswiththeaimtocollectand
transmitdatatoevaluateandtracktheperformanceofanathlete.Theprimaryenergysourceistheimpactbetweentheshoe
andthegroundwhilewalkingorrunning.Theharvesterhasbeendesignedbymeansofamulti-physicsoptimizationbased
on an integrated electromagnetic-mechanical-electric-electronic simulator. Thus an automated optimization of the device
withrespecttovolumeconstraints,magnetsdimensions,inductioncoilsplacementandsizesandelectric/electroniccoupling
havebeenperformedtoincreasetheaveragepowerextractedfromthedeviceatdifferentspeeds.Theseparametersareused
as starting point for the product development phase in order to obtain a consistent number of prototypes and validate the
simulationsonthesephysical demonstrators.Finally,experimental outcomes evince theexpected performance andamore
thansatisfactoryagreementwiththemodels,confirmingthefeasibilityoftheapplication.

Experimentalapplication
1.1 Introduction
Powering remote wireless sensors exploiting the energy of the environment with the aim of making their life independent
fromsomeenergylimitedpowersourcelikeanelectrochemicalbattery,isachallengingtask.Inaddition,batteriesareoften
notsuitableornotenoughcapacious,theirsubstitutionisnotfeasibleorsimplyannoyingandtheyintroducesomeproblems
duetothetoxicityoftheirchemicals.
Duetothegrowingofthewearableelectronicsmarket,oneofthemostdebatedtopicsinthefieldofenergyharvestingis
thepowersupplyofallthosedeviceswheretheenergysourceisthehumanbodymotion.
ThepresentstudyproposesawearabledevicetotallypoweredbyanEnergyHarvester(EH):anelectricallyautonomous
bluetoothstep-counterplacedinthesoleoftrainingshoes.Thissensorallowscollectingandtransmittingdatatoabluetooth
receiverdevice,asasmartphone,toevaluateandtrackingtheathleteperformance.Figure1.1schematicallyrepresentsthe
workingprinciple:ateachstepenergyisharvestedandusedtopowertheelectricinterface.
Twopossiblestrategiesareavailabletocollectenergyinshoesduringastep,usuallybypiezoelectricorelectromagnetic
transducers:soledeformationcausedbythecontactwiththegroundandshocksduetotheimpactsoftheheelontheground.
Piezoelectricdevicesusingsoledeformationaredescribedby[1,2]whileinertialpiezoelectricgenerators,composedby
acantileverbeamwithamassonthefreeend,aredescribedin[3,4].References[5,6]presenttwolinearelectromagnetic
generators with one or more magnets sliding into a guide placed horizontally in the shoe. These devices do not have any
kindofsprings.Arotarygeneratoractivatedbyaharmextendingunderthesoleisdescribedin[7].Ageneratorusingaflow
betweentwopumpsplacedinthefrontandintherearofthesoleispresentedin[8].
Theproposeddeviceisanelectromagneticenergyharvesterthatexploitsasprimaryenergysourcetheimpactoftheheel
on the ground during each step of walking or running activity. Differently from the devices presented in [5, 6] this one is
placedintheheelwithverticalslidingaxis.
