headedplantofwet,opensitesinwesternU.S.andadjacentCanadawas
longknownasSeneciosubnudusDC.,anamethatwasintroducedbyA.P.
deCandollein1837.Unfortunately,deCandolleusedtheepithet"subnudus"
twice;theothertimeForanAfricanplant. HeinrichW.Buck(1840)rec-
ognizedtheerrorinhisindextotheProdromusandhechosetheAfrican
planttobethecorrectSeneciosubnudus.HethencalledtheAmericanplant
SeneciocymbalnrioidesW.Buck,andunfortunately,thisnameremainedforgotten
until the 1960s (Barkley 1962). Inthemeantime, awidespreadplantof
westernNorthAmericawasnamedSeneciocynibalarioidesbyThomasNtittall.
ItwasnecessarytochangethenameoftheNorthAmericanS. subnudus
DC. to .V. cynibalarioidesH. Buck, andS. cymbalarioidesNutt. thenbe-
cameS. streptanthifoliusGreene, whichis the nextoldestavailablename
forthatentity(Barkley 1962).RecognitionofthegentisPackeraretjuired
TrockandBarkley,NewcombinationsandanewnameinPacltera 387
thetransferofmanyepithetsinto thatgenusand, unfortunately, Senecio
cymbalarioidesNutt.wastransferredintoPackerawhereitbecame/?cymbalarioides
(Nutt.)W.A.Weber&A.Love,(Weber&Love1981).Shortlythereafter,
WeberandLoverecognizedthatitwasS.cymbalarioidesH.Buekthatshould
havebeentransferredtoPackera,sotheymadethecombination:Pcyimbalaroides
(H.Buek)WA.Weber&A.Love(Weber1984).ThetransferoftheNuttall
epithetintoPackerapreoccupiesthatnameinPackerasoPackeracymbalioides
(H.Buek)W.A.Weber&A.Loveisillegitimateandmustberejectedac-
cordingtheInternationalCodeofBotanicalNomenclature(Greuteretal.
1994).Thus,theAmericanplantfirstknownasSeneciosubnudusDC.and
thenasSeneciocymblalrioidesBuekmusthaveanewname.Thenewepi-
thetthatwechoseforthisdistinctiveplantcommemoratesHeinrichWilhelm
Buek,the 19thCenturyGermanbotanistwhosecarefullypreparedindex
todeCandolle'sProdromusgaverisetotheneedforthisnewname.
