Pref ace
A lthough I have published over 60 articles and been recognized by my peers for my
work, I have always felt the need to write a book and had this dream in the back of
my mind. Over the past decade, several of my research projects have focused on the
service industry. While I was able to achieve my end results with each of these proj-
ects by publishing them as articles in top-tier academic journals, one of their most
challenging aspects was the diffi culty in locating data on the service sector.
After wrapping up my last research project in this area, it occurred to me that a
book which served as an information primer on the service sector would be a valu-
able asset to researchers like myself, industry practitioners, and public policymak-
ers. Additionally, I was convinced that there was no other comparable alternative
resource, as I have been searching for one like it for many years. I thought that if
there is a lack of data for the US market itself (a market for which more information
is typically available than most), it would likely be much more diffi cult to locate
similar data for other markets. This led me to envision a reference book to fi ll the
(admittedly narrow) niche in the market. However, there was one thing I did not
recognize when I committed myself to this project. Despite this project’s narrow
niche, its scope is necessarily wide, and I soon discovered that it would be impos-
sible to claim to be any kind of expert on all nations and industry segments. I do
understand that much of the information presented in the book can be replicated by
someone else, provided one has the background knowledge and access to the same
information. However, I envision it helping many individuals by saving time, as it is
a ready store of information and should serve as a quick reference on the service
sector. Thank you for reading this book, and I hope it serves you well by presenting
the information you seek.
