Es tomar al toro por los cuernos y afirmar lo siguiente: ni la revolución, ni la técnica, ni la nostalgia, ni los reformadores han podido sacar al hombre del vacío existencial que irremediablemente trae una sociedad moderna y, acaso, la misma condición humana: «los reformadores liberales y los desengañados revolucionarios se dan cita ante la tumba de sus esperanzas», escribe el teólogo suizo.Y es que sin Dios, el hombre no podría responder a las tres grandes preguntas que, según Kant, son el motivo de la razón humana: ¿qué puedo hacer? (pregunta por la verdad), ¿qué debo hacer? (pregunta por la norma) y ¿qué me cabe esperar? (pregunta por el sentido). Para Kant, Dios es un postulado. Para Küng es la base sobre la que gira todo el mundo fáctico. Pero a ese Dios sólo se le puede conocer en la práctica. No hay comprobación para negar o para afirmar a Dios. La razón humana no da para eso.
