EDITORIAL NUMBER FOUR!
I don’t know what came over me. I usually dabble at my editorial, then hone it
over a few days. But this month I have written, and discarded three editorials.
So, I’d better come clean and hope that this one passes all the tests!
My first one was about being conned, yes, me! I thought I was up to all the
tricks, having read the warnings in NHW briefings and Police Reports. But they
nearly got me – it was the final demand that my ‘windfall’ shares worth £50,000
could only be obtained by purchasing an indemnity costing £4422.40p. Please
BEWARE – I nearly fell for it – thank goodness for Poppy’s common sense.
Number two was a swipe at POLDARK and what I considered a drift away from
the hardships of tin miners into the realms of Mills and Boon. Did you know that
if you write a Mills and Boon ‘novel’ that by page 10 you get lines like “His eyes
rolled down her back”! I was saved from upsetting my beloved Rosie, an AVID
Poldark fan, when Poppy pointed out that half of the readership also love the
programme – so in the bin went Poldark.
Item three was all about a beautifully produced Channel 4 documentary called
“Care homes for 4-year olds”. I loved it. 10 ‘old dears’ (some younger than me)
were given the chance to interact with 10 four-year olds. It was an eyeopener.
The trepidation of the residents, sitting in their armchairs, was palpable. But the
lovely children made friends, asked probing questions, and seemed to adopt the
residents when they knew their names. There were Sports Days, Plays and
games, and the residents responded. I dreaded the thought that at the end of
the 6 week project that the children would leave and the ‘old dears’ would be
devastated and be back sitting in their armchairs. But, someone thought of that
and the contact would remain, and even improve. I now know that a lot of you
saw this programme, so why should I reiterate it for you.
So, this is number 4. I will relate that one of

Shirley made sure of that!). And especial thanks to our wonderful customers for their kind
comments, support and unsolicited donations. Because of everyone’s generosity we had no
outgoings so every penny we took was profit. We actually doubled our takings on last year!
Did you support this community project? If you couldn’t attend I would really urge you to do
so next year. With their commitment and enthusiasm, the Village Hall Committee can only
make this celebration of our community bigger and better each time. We will definitely be
donning our pinnies and firing up the urn again next year.
Coming back down to earth, September is upon us. We are now into late summer, but we
have another fun filled programme to keep some sunshine in our lives. On the 7th we have
Committee meeting and prize Bingo, on the 14th our Club Forum with wine and nibbles; sorry
folks but a members only meeting where we decide what direction our club is going to take in
the future and, more importantly, how much wine we need to buy. On the 21st we have Mary
Lane, a professional singer with many years’ experience in the entertainment industry. Then
on the 28th our Coach trip to Broadway and Bourton-on-the Water in the beautiful Cotswolds.
