Preface
The Joint International Semantic Technology Conference (JIST) is a regional
federation of semantic technology-related conferences. JIST 2012 was a joint
effort between the JIST Conference and SIG on the Semantic Web and On-
tology of Japanese Society for AI (JASI). The mission of JIST is to bring to-
gether researchers from the semantic technology community and other areas of
semantic-relatedtechnologiestopresenttheirinnovativeresearchresultsornovel
applicationsofsemantictechnologies.Bysemantictechnology,wemeannotonly
the Semantic Web but also ontology, metadata, linked open data, OWL/RDF
languages, description logics, etc.
JIST2012consistedofmaintechnicaltracksincluding aregularpapertrack,
an in-use track, two special tracks on linked data in practice and database in-
tegration, three workshops, and a tutorial. We had 90 submissions for the main
technical tracks from 26 countries which include not only Asian countries but
also many European countries. Statistics is shown below.
Regular papers 55
In-use track papers 16
Special track papers 15
Linked data in practice: 11
Database integration: 4
Total 86
Every paper was reviewed by three reviewers on average and then discussed
by the Chairs.Inthese proceedings, there are 33 papersthat were acceptedand
presentedin the conference:20full papersfor the researchtrack,7 shortpapers
for the in-use track, and 6 short papers for the special tracks (linked data in
practice: 4; database integration: 2).
The topics were well distributed, from theoretical studies on ontology and
description logics to applications of semantic technology. In particular, many
papersarerelatedtolinkeddata.Thetrendisencouragingtoussinceitindicates
that semantic technology has been deployed in the real world.
Without the hard work and close cooperationof the OrganizingCommittee,
the great success of JIST 2012 would not have been possible. We all thank
the members of the Program Committee and local Organizing Committee for
their constant support. Special thanks also go to the sponsors and supporting
organizations for their financial support.
