Preface
Dearfriends:
HereisacollectionofarticlesbyyoungscholarsfromGermanandRussianmininguniver-
sities,devotedtoproblematicissuesofsubsoiluse.Theobjectiveneedtobringoutaseparate
publication with research results obtained by young scientists of the two countries has long
beenoverdue.
TheuniversitiesofRussiaandGermanyworkhardtotrainhighlyqualifiedpersonnel,sup-
port scientific schools and improve the image of specialities related to the raw material base,
explainingtheindispensabilityofsuchprofessions.
Workingwithyoungresearchers,supportingtheirindividualprofessionaldevelopment,and
creatingconditionsformobilityandscientificcollaborationareessentialforRussian-German
RawMaterialsForumfoundedinDresdenthirteenyearsago.
InNovember2019,the12thRussian-GermanRawMaterialsForumwilltraditionallytake
place in St Petersburg; for the first time its program includes a separate day for youth
discussions.
IwouldliketoquotethewordsofKlausTöpfer,thechairmanoftheorganizingcommittee
fromtheGermanside,whichhesaidin2018attheForumheldinPotsdam:“Wearemoving
by leaps and bounds to a world which 10 billion people will live in. When I was born, 2.6
billionpeoplelivedonplanetEarth.Wecannotbutaskquestions:whatimpactdoesthishave
orwillhaveonresources,ontheenergy?Thenewgenerationwillhavetosearchforanswers.
Itisessentialthattoday100youngscientistsrepresentinguniversitiesinRussiaandGermany
are present here because we focus not on the past, but in the future, we understand what is
importantforthefuture.”
The Youth Agenda with master classes, a case-based contest of project presentations
give researchers plenty of opportunities to manifest themselves and, possibly, find poten-
tial customers. The publication of a collection of scientific articles prepared by young
participants is not only a mark of respect to the work they have done but also an
objective assessment of its quality by international top experts. This is the way to suc-
cess! Throughout the long-term cooperation among the leading scientific schools of Ger-
many and Russia, a huge material of great value has been accumulated; it can be used
to create modern technologies in the handling of minerals from exploration and produc-
tion to deep processing.
Germany has the oldest mining schools in the world and a well-developed mining and
engineering base. Maintaining traditional close ties with Russia enables Germany, on the
one hand, to export its research and production potential, and, on the other hand, fight-
ing deficit of its mineral resources, the country is interested in the reliable supply of raw
materials.
The concept of sustainable development and escalating demands to reduce the envir-
onmental impact force radical changes in the strategy for improving the mineral and
raw materials complex in Germany: abandon traditional technologies in favor of alter-
native sources of heat and energy, ensure a complete restoration of the environment at
the end of field development, maintain a high professional staff potential in the
industry.
InRussia,oneofthemainsuppliersofmineralandenergyresourcestoGermany,themod-
ernization of the mineral and raw materials complex is rapidly advancing based on the latest
