Jacob is a simple Zulu boy who has recently come out of prison. On the train home he falls asleep and is forced to get off the train at the next station down the line. This means that he has to climb up a rock face and make his way through dense bushveld. Unbeknown to Jacob, an ancient monk is watching over him and guiding him up to a cave with a front door built directly into the rocks. When Jacob reaches the door, he accidentally bumps it open and this action reveals a vast cave. Feeling scared but curious, Jacob enters the cave and eventually encounters the monk and his magnificent jewel. When the monk offers him the jewel he takes it, because he reasons he could buy a fleet of taxis with the money he’ll earn from selling the jewel. But at this point, he doesn’t know that the monk and the jewel hold a secret weapon, that will persuade him to return the jewel to the monk and in turn ask for his blessing . — In the end and after much deliberation, Jacob returns to college and soon he becomes first a teacher and then the principal of the village school. Here he tells all the children about his strange encounter with the old monk, who taught him the lesson that truth and honesty always pays in the end. The old monk is aware that Jacob is continuing to keep his promise, and every time he hears Jacob telling the story, he chuckles with delight, before moving on to the next person he intends to help by revealing to him the secret of the monk’s jewel. -This is an allegory as well as a story -about how a little nudge in the right direction can send a person destined to spend his life in jail, in a completely different direction. So maybe you will meet such a monk one day and if you do, listen to what he tells you very carefully.
