Ma quegli orrori non erano altro se non «le doglie che annunciavano la nascita del Messia». Per accelerare la liberazione – così dicevano gli emissari di Shabbatay Tzevi – bisognava immergersi nell'oscurità del peccato: solo la discesa agli inferi avrebbe consentito l'ascesa delle anime, e la perfetta redenzione. Anche gli abitanti di Goraj, «la città nascosta tra le colline in capo al mondo», si abbandonano dunque all'idolatria e alla licenza, infrangendo ogni legge. Ma la sciagura si abbatte su di loro: dopo aver giaciuto, benché sposata, con il capo dei sabbatiani, Rechele la profetessa viene posseduta da un <em>dybbuk</em>, e finisce per essere ingravidata da Satana, mentre la disperazione stringe in una morsa la città, stremata dalla carestia. Perché a Goraj «vi sia contentezza» bisognerà che le forze demoniache vengano scacciate, e il nome dell'Onnipotente sia di nuovo santificato. «Che meraviglioso, meraviglioso mondo,» ha scritto Henry Miller «un mondo bello e terribile, quello di Isaac Bashevis Singer, benedetto sia il suo nome!».
