ABSTRACT
The laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation in adults cause stress response
manifested by a marked haemodynamic changes and autonomic reflex activity
which may be a cause of concern in many high risk patients. Objective of this
study is to know the effects of oral clonidine with respect to heart rate, blood
pressure, attenuation of sympathetic responses to laryngoscopy and intubation,
respiratory rate and undesirable effects.
Methods:-
100 normotensive patients belonging to ASA I status scheduled for elective
surgical procedure were selected randomly and divided into two groups of 50
each. Group I received 4µgmkg-1 oral clonidine and Group II Multivitamin
tablet 90 minutes before induction of anaesthesia. Sedation, Dryness of tongue,
respiratory rate, heart rate, systolic and diastolic pressure and mean arterial
pressure were recorded during premedication and 90 minutes after
premedication. Also the HR, systolic, diastolic blood pressures, MAP were
recorded non-invasively during induction and for the first five minutes following
intubation. Paired and unpaired students T test, and repeated measures ANOVA
test was used for statistical analysis. And undesirable effects and also
complications were looked for.
Results:-
After premedication (90 minutes later) with oral clonidine 4µgmkg-1, sedation,
heart rate, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, MAP, respiratory
rate was equally comparable to the placebo group. After intubation, the
incidence of tachycardia was significantly greater in the Placebo group than in
