MISSION STATEMENT

The Society of Gynecologic Surgeons’ mission is to
promote the highest standards for gynecologic surgical
care for women in a safe, effective and ethical manner.

To realize this mission, the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons
has as its principles:

1. To promote the acquisition of knowledge and the
improvement of skills in gynecologic surgery.

2. To enhance the understanding of gynecology and
gynecologic surgery through basic and clinical
research.

3. To be a source of public and professional information.

WELCOME FROM
THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to the great state of Texas for the 37th Annual Meeting of the Society
of Gynecologic Surgeons! Doug Hale and the program committee have put
together a wonderful schedule of events with many opportunities to learn from,
share with and enjoy your colleagues. The educational program this year has
been expanded to include optional educational activities in the afternoon. I would
like to highlight several activities in the program:

On Sunday, before the scientific program begins, there is an outstanding
postgraduate course - Advanced Vaginal Surgery Techniques for the Specialist –
taught by a faculty of expert vaginal surgeons including Drs. Mark Walters, Cindy
Amundsen, Holly Richter and John Gebhart. Additionally, the Society of
Gynecologic Surgeons Systematic Review Group (SRG), meets on Sunday to
continue its work in reviewing the gynecologic surgery literature and producing
practice guidelines for the members of our Society.

The official scientific program begins on Monday. As President, I had the
pleasure of inviting Dr. Alan Guttmacher to be this years TeLinde lecturer. Dr.
Guttmacher is Director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child
Health and Human Development and will speak on “A Genomicist’s Vision for the
future of Gynecologic Research and Practice”. On Monday afternoon, Dr.
Guttmacher will participate in a dialogue with SGS members and guests
regarding the future of pelvic floor research.

During the meeting, Dr. Hale has planned a series of debates that promise to be
both informative and fun. Topics include, “Uterine Preservation or Removal at the
Time of Prolapse Surgery”, “Ovarian Preservation or Removal at the Time of
Peri- or Post-menopausal Hysterectomy”, and “Robotic or Straight Stick
Laparoscopy for Minimally Invasive Pelvic Surgery”. Throughout the scientific
program, surgical and educational videos will be shown. Due to the high quality
and quantity of video submissions this year, there will be an optional videofest on
Monday and Tuesday afternoon.

Tuesday morning there will be thirteen roundtable discussions including relevant
topics such as mesh complications, fistula evaluation and management,
laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy, robotic surgery, and coding and reimbursement.
The roundtable discussions are very popular and provide an opportunity to
interact directly with experts. Also on Tuesday, Dr. Christopher Beard, Chair of
Vertebrate Paleontology at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History will give a
thought-provoking lecture on the evolution of the pelvis entitled, “The Obstetric
Dilemma of Human Evolution.”

New to the SGS program this year are an educational breakfast symposium on
Monday morning and a dinner symposium on Tuesday. It is hoped that the
addition of these symposiums, as well as the optional educational activities in the
afternoons, will provide attendees more opportunities for learning and interaction
with colleagues.

Socially, we have planned a number of fun activities for members and guests
including the traditional Golf Tournament on Monday. The San Antonio Fiesta
occurs during our meeting and the annual fiesta river parade on Monday evening
promises to be a good time for all! I also encourage you to explore the Riverwalk
and take in some Texas history by visiting the nearby Alamo.

The Society of Gynecologic Surgeons is growing as more gynecologic surgeons
recognize the important role that our Society plays in education and research. If
you are a member, reach out to the many guests who are here this year. And if
you are not yet a member, be sure to meet as many members as you can and
consider submitting an application for membership. The guidelines can be found
on the Society’s web page at www.sgsonline.org.

I hope to have an opportunity to visit with each of you personally at some point
during the meeting. Enjoy the scholarly and social interactions offered this year.
