American double bassist Frederick Zimmermann Born in Budapest, Hungary, Victor Aitay (1921–2012)
(1906–1967) was a renowned performer and teacher. served the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for fifty
He was a member of the New York Philharmonic seasons. He started as assistant concertmaster (1954–
(1930–1966), where he served as both assistant principal 1965), became associate concertmaster (1965–1967),
and principal bassist. He was on the faculty at Juilliard, then concertmaster (1967–1986), and finally
Mannes, and the Manhattan School of Music, as well as concertmaster emeritus (1986–2003).
NYU and Columbia University. Zimmermann has often
been referred to as “the father of bass teaching in the Victor also served as a professor of violin at DePaul

Barbara Kroll
Barbara Kroll (1930- ) was a superlative viola player who
learned to play under the tutelage of her father, the late
great William Kroll. Barbara was a fixture in Boston-area
orchestras for more than five decades as both a perform-
er and manager. She had the privilege to befriend and
perform with many of the greatest musicians of our time,
including Leonard Bernstein, Jascha Heifetz, and Artur
Rubinstein.
