This novel is not entirely fantasy. Nikolai Bakhtin, elder brother
of the celebrated Russian critic Mikhail Bakhtin, was indeed a
close friend of Ludwig Wittgenstein, the foremost English-
language philosopher of the century. Wittgenstein did indeed live
for a while in a cottage on the west coast of Ireland, although at a
later time than suggested here. Most of the rest is invented.
