Preface
Every four years, the International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, ISRM, holds its
Congress, a series that started in 1966 in Lisbon, Portugal, and that it is now in its 14th edition. ISRM
Council awarded in 2014 the task of organizing its 2019 International Congress to the National Groups
of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay; it is with great honor that the Chairs of the Congress present this
volume to the rock mechanics community. As in the previous occasions, the Congress mobilizes resear-
chers, professors, engineers and students around contemporaneous themes relevant to rock mechanics
and rock engineering. This volume contains the written version of 7 Keynote Lectures and 449 papers
distributed over ten chapters, covering up-to-date studies in topics that cover fundamental research in
rock mechanics, laboratory and experimental field studies, petroleum, mining and civil engineering
applications.
The Proceedings also include the prestigious ISRM Award Lectures, namely, the Leopold Muller
Award Lecture, this time around delivered by professor Peter K. Kaiser and the Manuel Rocha Award
Lecture, and delivered by Dr. Quinghua Lei.
