Abstract
Localization and mapping are fundamental requirements to enable mobile robots to
operate robustly in their environments. The solution of these two problems will allow
robots to assist humans in important tasks such as autonomous driving or hazardous
search-and-rescue missions. These complexnavigation tasks require arobot to build a
mapwhilesimultaneouslylocalizingitselfinit. Itisrelativelystraightforwardtobuilda
map with perfect sensors. The challenge arises when a mobile robot needs to perform
both mapping and localization with noisy sensors. This requires a robot to reliably
recognizeapreviouslyvisitedplace,whilebeingrobusttonoiseinsensormeasurements
andperceptualaliasingduetorepetitivestructuresintheenvironment.
Inthisthesis,we haveproposednovelsimultaneouslocalizationandmapping(SLAM)
algorithmswhicharemorerobusttoplacerecognitionandsensorerrors. Ourmethodscan
recoverfromerrorsresultingfromvisualaliasingduetoambiguityintheenvironment.
Additionally, our methods are more robust to gross non-Gaussian errors in sensor mea-
surements. Asmapbuildingcanbecastasanoptimizationproblem,mappingalgorithms
should be robust to poor initialization. Furthermore, the methods we have developed
enable robots to mitigate the effects of poor initializations. In contrast to other meth-
ods that first find a good initialization to seed the optimization or that remove outliers
before optimization, our method is more elegant as it does not require an additional
pre-processingstep.
Wealsosurveyseveral geodetic mappingmethodswithanaimat providing ageodetic
perspective of SLAM, as both fields share similarities when it comes to building large
maps. Weshowthatmanystate-of-the-artrobotmappingalgorithmshaveadirectrelation
togeodeticmappingtechniquesdevelopedmanydecadesearlier. Oursurveywillpossibly
inspirenewsolutionstolarge-scale,autonomousroboticSLAMmethods.
Finally, we believe that robots should be able to navigate with already available
mapseveniftheyarebuiltforhumansorforotherpurposes. Thiswillsavesignificant
computational and sensor requirements on the robot, reduce the setup time, and allow
them to operate in environments without previously visiting them. In this regard, we
outlineanovelapproachtometriclocalizationthatdoesnotrequiretheconstructionof
anewmapwhenonealreadyexists. Thecentralideaistoleveragegeotaggedimagery
onGoogleStreetViewasanaccuratesourceforglobalpositioningandlocalizearobot
usingonlyamonocularcamerawithodometricestimates.

We have releasedopensourceimplementationsofour methodsandtestedthemexten-
sively on simulated as well asreal-world datasets collected on mobile robots. Our claims
aresupportedbycomparisonstoexistingstate-of-the-artmethodsandverifiedbyother
researchers. We believe that our methods will bring us closer to a future with mobile
robotsnavigatingautonomouslyandassistinghumansintheirdailytasks.
Zusammenfassung
Die Fa¨higkeit autonom zu navigieren ist eine wesentliche Voraussetzung fu¨r mobile
Roboter,um robustinunbekannten Umgebungen zuagieren. SieversetztRoboter indie
Lage, Menschen bei vielen Aufgaben zu unterstu¨tzen: Hierzu geho¨ren beispielsweise
Transportaufgaben, autonomes Fahren oder gefa¨hrliche Such- und Rettungseinsa¨tze.
SolchkomplexeNavigationsaufgabenerfordern,dassRobotereineKartederUmgebung
erstellenundsichgleichzeitigdarinlokalisierenko¨nnen. Fu¨reinenRoboteristesrelativ
einfach,eineKartezuerstellen,solangeersich-beispielsweisemitfehlerfreienSensoren
-exaktlokalisierenkann. DaSensoreninderRealita¨tallerdingsnichtperfektsind,wird
diesjedochzueinerHerausforderung,sobaldeinmobilerRoboterbeideAufgaben,d.h.
die Umgebungskartierung und die Lokalisierung, gleichzeitig lo¨sen muss. Um beide
Problemezeitgleichzulo¨sen,musseinRobotereinenzuvorbesuchtenOrtzuverla¨ssig
wiedererkennenunddabeigleichzeitigmitSensorrauschenundMehrdeutigkeiteninder
WahrnehmungaufgrundsichwiederholenderUmweltstrukturenumgehenko¨nnen.
IndieserArbeithabenwirAlgorithmenzurgleichzeitigenLokalisierungundKartierung
(Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, SLAM) entwickelt, die robust gegenu¨ber
Ortserkennungs-undSensorfehlernsind. UnsereMethodenko¨nnenmitgrobenFehlern
umgehen,dieausvisuellem“Aliasing”aufgrundvonMehrdeutigkeiteninderUmgebung
entstanden sind. Daru¨ber hinaus sind unsere Methoden robust gegen extreme nicht-
normalverteilte Fehler in den Sensormessungen. Da Lokalisierung und Kartierung als
Optimierungsproblemverstandenwerdenkann,solltendiezuentwickelndenAlgorithmen
robustgegenschlechteInitialisierungensein. DievonunsentwickeltenMethodensind
unterandereminderLage,dieAuswirkungeneinerschlechtenInitialisierungabzufedern.
ImGegensatzzudenmeistenanderenMethoden,welchezuna¨chsteineguteInitialisierung
mitexternenMittelnfindenoderdieAusreißervorderOptimierungentfernenmu¨ssen,
istunsereMethodezudemeleganter,dasiekeinezusa¨tzlichenVorverarbeitungsschritte
erfordert.
DesWeiterenfu¨hrenwirindieserArbeitaucheinegeoda¨tischeBetrachtungdesSLAM
Problemsein,dadieStrukturdesSLAMProblemsvieleGemeinsamkeitenmitmehreren
geoda¨tischen Kartierungsmethodenin Bezug auf dieErstellung gro¨ßerer Karten aufweist.
Wirzeigen,dassvielehochmoderneKartierungsalgorithmenfu¨rRobotereinendirekten
Bezugzugeoda¨tischenVerfahrenbesitzen. Daru¨berhinaussindwirderMeinung,dass
RoboterinderLageseinsollten,mithilfevonKartenzunavigieren,welcheurspru¨nglich

fu¨rMenschenerstellt wurden. Dieswu¨rdedie Anforderung anRechenleistungundSen-
sorikerheblichreduzierenundRoboternermo¨glichen,invorhernicht-besuchtenUmge-
bungen flexibel und selbststa¨ndig zu agieren. In diesem Zusammenhang beschreiben
wir einen neuen Ansatz zur metrischen Lokalisierung, der weder die Erstellung einer
konsistentenKartenocheinenvorherigenBesuchderUmgebungerfordert. Diezentrale
Idee ist, georeferenzierte Bilderaus Google Street View alszentrale Quelle zur globaler
Ortsbestimmungzu nutzenund einenRoboter,der nurmiteiner monokularenKamera
undOdometriescha¨tzungenausgestatteist,robustundgenauzulokalisieren.
Neben der Konzeption und der Entwicklung neuer Verfahren haben wir auch Open-
Source-Implementierungen unserer Methoden vero¨ffentlicht und sie ausfu¨hrlich mit
simulierten sowie mit Datensa¨tzen, die von mobilen Robotern aufgezeichnet wurden,
getestetundevaluiert. UnsereAnsa¨tzewurdenmitdemaktuellenStandderTechnikver-
glichenunddesWeiterenauchvonanderenForschernaufderenRoboternu¨berpru¨ft. Wir
sindderAnsicht,dassunsereMethodenunsna¨heraneineZukunftbringen,indermobile
RoboterautonomnavigierenundMenschenbeiihrerta¨glichenArbeitunterstu¨tzen.
