Itisagreathonortoserveaseditorforthisbookofroboticsurgery.
ThedaVinciSurgicalSystemwasfirstlaunchedin1999.Inthebeginning,the
device was marketed with major features that included fine tissue manipulation
capability,suchasincoronaryarterybypassgrafting.Graduallytheefficacyofits
multidimensional forceps and three-dimensional endoscope was increasingly
appliedtodiversediseasesoutsidethecardiacfield.Notably,robot-assistedsurgery
is becoming the gold standard for urological surgeries including prostatectomy.
Furthermore,gynecologyhasbeenrecognizedasthenextmainfocus,and“national
diseases” including digestive diseases in Asian countries have also become the
targetofapplication.Regardingcardiacsurgeries,thedaVincisystemiscurrently
usedincoronaryarterybypassgraftingbyalimitednumberofsurgeonsbecauseof
the complicated techniques involved, but applications to structural heart diseases
such as valvular diseases and atrial septal defect are expanding. In these ways,
robotics has made revolutionary changes to the future of surgery in all surgical
disciplines. Since Billroth conducted the first successful gastrectomy, there have
beenfewlandmarksofprogressinthehistoryofsurgery.However,accompanying
the introduction of the da Vinci system, we are witnessing a gradual shift of all
surgical treatments to endoscopic and robot-assisted procedures. This book
summarizesthecurrentdevelopmentstogetherwithupdates.
I have invited leading experts in their respective fields to write the chapters of
this book and to share with us the most up-to-date knowledge. I would like to

Overview of Robotic Surgery

1.1 The Development of Robotic Surgical System
Morethan25yearsago,roboticsurgicalsystemwasintroducedinthesurgicalfield.
In 1985, Kwoh et al. [17] modified industrial robot and performed biopsies in
the neurosurgical field using the modified robot. In this surgical procedure, the
modified robot provided the greater precision than the conventional procedure. In
1993,AESOP™ (Automated EndoscopicSystemfor Optimal Positioning),which
had pedals or voice-controlled robotic arm with an endoscope, was developed by
ComputerMotionInc.(Goleta,CA,USA) andtheFoodandDrugAdministration
(FDA) approved the fist model of the AESOP™ in 1994. This system made it
possible for the surgeon to control his visual field. In 1992, as the active robot,
theROBODOC™(ISS,IntegratedSurgicalSystems,Sacramento,CA,USA)was
developed for total hip replacement in the orthopedic field [5]. This system
provided the precision of the milling of the femoral cavity with the program
based on the preoperative imaging and the perioperative information. In 2008,
FDA approved a revised ROBODOC™ system (Curexo Technology Corp.,
Fremont,CA,USA),whichisnowcommerciallyavailableintheUSA.
Asthemaster–slavesystem,ZEUS™roboticsurgicalsystemwasintroducedby
ComputerMotionInc.(Goleta,CA,USA)in1998andimprovedsurgeondexterity
in the minimally invasive surgery. ZEUS™ consisted of two physicallyseparated
subsystems,whichwereasurgeoncontrolcenterandthreeroboticarmsattachedto
the operating table. The computer system in ZEUS connects the surgeon control
centerandroboticarmsandcanfiltertremorsandprovide3Dvision[12].In2001,
Marescauxetal.[18]usedZEUS™systemtoperformthefirsttransatlanticrobot-
assisted laparoscopic cholecystectomy between New York and Strasburg using a
