In questo libro si viene a dimostrare che, nei fatti, Riccardo dovette indossare una «maschera» – che egli stesso si impose, data la sua personale posizione – del re cristiano, generoso, benefattore, mistico soldato della Crociata, sotto la quale stava il «volto» autentico di un normanno, crudele, selvaggio, sanguinario, volubile, avido di ricchezze. Le sue azioni, nel bene e nel male, risentono del contrasto fra essere e apparire, fra il suo status di re e i suoi impulsi celati. Talora prevaleva la maschera, talora il volto: donde l’evidente contraddittorietà dei suoi comportamenti.
