The records contained in this Roster were begun with those presented by the
Daughters of the American Revolution and the WPA to the State of Ohio as a tribute of
respect to the hardy pioneers who transplanted to this State the noble ideals for which
they fought from 1775 to 1783, and who now sleep the last sleep beneath its soil, 1929.
They were amended by other sources described in the bibliography at the end of these
records and data posted on the National Society of the Sons of the American
Revolution, Patriot & Grave Index website.

Amendment will continue as research identifies other Patriot Ancestors buried in Ohio
or additional details of existing individuals.

Born in 1755 in Maryland. He served as a Private in the Maryland Line, enlisting in Flying
Camp under Colonel Addison. He Married Lucy Smallwood (1758-1844) in 1776;
children: Henry, Osborne, George, Theodore, William, John, Allison and Mary. He lived
in Prince George County, MD at time of enlistment and was one of the early settlers in
Kirkwood Township, Belmont County, OH when he moved to there in 1817. He was
pensioned in Belmont county, OH having applied on November 5, 1832 Ref S2337. He
died on July 10, 1842 in Hendrysburg, OH and buried at Acton Cemetery, Kirkwood

Served as a drummer boy & Fifer in Capt Finley's Company, Pa Line in the Rev. Also
served as an Indian spy under St Clair, and a coat worn by him is in the Smithsonian
Institution, Washington, DC. A Maj in Mil at beginning of 1812 and commanded Ft
Green. Br Oct 26, 1767 in Pa. Mar Elizabeth Ellis, Ft Washington (now Cincinnati).
Children: Elizabeth Adams Worley (first white female child born in Cincinnati.) D Nov
28, 1832. Bur in the first township cemetery in Ohio, Martin Cemetery on 6117
Culbertson Rd., Greenville, OH 45331 came into existence in 1815. 3 miles east of
Greenville, Adams Twp, near Bears Mills, formerly Adams Mill, built by him on land

OH. He was pensioned S8019. He Died on January 9, 1840 at 81 years, 11 months at

Br 1740, Virginia. John served in the French and Indian War in 1758 under Col. Wm.
Byrd in the 2nd Virginia Regiment and in Capt. Hancock Eustace's Company when Gen.
James Forbes captured Fort Duquesne. Like his father, John was an overseer of the
building of roads in Frederick County from at least 1771-1773. In 1776 John and Ann
were living in what is now Harrison County, West Virginia (Harrison County created in
1784 from Monongalia County, in 1776 became Monongalia, formerly West Augusta
District, part of Augusta County, Virginia). He may have obtained this land from his
service in the Revolutionary War. John served in the Virginia Continental Line during
the Revolutionary War circa 1777, a sergeant in the infantry. John married Ann McNeil
circa 1770 in Winchester, Frederick County. Children: William, Gabriel, John, Joseph,

Born May 9, 1733 in Campbellton, Scotland to father son of James Alexander of
Campbeltown, Argyle, Scotland who came to State Ridge , Maryland and died there in
1771. He served as a Private with the Westmorland County, Pennsylvania Militia.

Margaret, James , Andrew, Nancy, Mary, John, Robert, Peter, Jenetta, Thomas, Elizabeth.
James was a farmer who settled along Glens Run stream as on of its earliest farms. He

ALFORD, ELIJAH, (Portage Co.) [41.25080 -81.04810]

Born Apr 13 1757, Berkshire, Massachusetts, He served as a Corporal in the
Revolutionary War in Captain Thomas William’s Company, Colonel John Patterson’s
Regiment. He was in the Cedars battle at St. Lawrence River and was captured by the
British and Indians. He married Oct 11, 1779 Olive Higley. Lived at Windham
Township, Portage County and was a member of the Becket Group which purchased
over 14,000 acres in Ohio. Drew pension. He served the town of Windham as a
surveyor, 1805, as juror, 1806, and was of the committee for visiting and inspecting
schools Windham. In September 3, 1807, he was chosen deacon of the Becket church.
On the 2nd of May, 1811, he and his wife, Olive, were prominent among the eleven
individuals who, with Colonel Benjamin Higley, the son of Olive Higley by her first
husband, formed the church in Becket, which was afterward established permanently at
Windham, Portage County, Ohio. removal there ,later in the season, he was made its
first deacon. The subsequent history depicts general growth and prosperity, proves
conclusively that the Divine protection and denying zeal of these earnest founders. It is
now known as the First Congregationalist Church in Ohio. He died Apr 11 1832,

Elizabeth Collins. He served after being commissioned a Captain, 2nd Regiment, New
Jersey Militia under Col Hawkinson. He Commanded his company of 29 men serving in
battalion command by Col. John Seward under Brig. Gen. William Winds at New
Windsor, NY, 24th October to 25 November, 1777; Commanded his regiment of 56
men serving under Col. Aaron Hankinson at Shrapnack, 6th to 13th July, 1778;
Commanded his company of 22 men serving under Col. Hankinson at Shrapnack, 15th
to 18th October, 1778. He Married Rachel Harker (1754-1827) 1772 in Sussex, NJ;
children: John, Mary, Daniel, George, Margaret, Rachel, Elijah, David, James, Ananias Jr.,
Elizabeth Jeremiah Rebecca and Elmira. He Died October 2, 1825 and Buried in old part
of Bloomingburg Cemetery, Bloomingburg, Fayette Co., OH. Official roster: Soldiers of
