If it were not for the constant encouragement and help along the way,
undertaking this endeavor would not have been possible. I would first
like to thank Dr. William Varner for setting me on this academic path
by “fanning the flame” (2 Tim 1:6). He has been a steady source of in-
spiration for all his students, a fine example of what it means to be a
scholar. My colleagues and friends at Wheaton College, have, probably
unwittingly, encouraged me to press on and finish the dissertation.
One colleague in particular deserves notice, Dr. Chris Vlachos, who has
shown me what it means to be “filled with the fruit of righteousness”
(Phil 1:11). Carol Elliott has graciously given her time and energy edit-
ing this manuscript, so I am greatly indebted to her input and com-

I would like to thank my doktorvater and friend, Dr. G. K. Beale, for
his unwavering encouragement through the years. His scholarship and
pedagogy are a model for which I will strive. He and his wife Dorinda
are a wellspring of joy and spiritual growth for my wife and me. Dr.

My in-laws, Norm and Sue Knapp, are a storehouse of love and
encouragement. Whether it is coming into town for the weekend or
hosting Christmas, they overflow with graciousness and kindness.
From the very beginning, my parents, Kevin and Sue, have been whol-

wholly supportive of my academic decisions. A son could not ask for
better love and support. At times, they probably wondered what God
had in store for me, but through tireless prayer and finances, they con-
tinued to defend my every decision. It is beyond a doubt that I would
not even have started down this academic route, had it not been for
such godly parents. I would like also to thank my brothers, Clayton
and Joel, for their friendship and encouragement in my studies through
the years. Hardly a day goes by that I do not treasure our kinship.
I thank my wife, Nicole, who has labored for several years, ena-
bling me to study full time. Her hard work, patience, and selflessness
are exemplary, while her faithfulness is a picture of Christ and the
church. I could not ask for a better companion on life’s journey, a lov-
ing friend and kindred spirit.
Above all, I thank Christ for equipping me and energizing me to
complete this task. “To the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ
our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time
and now and forever. Amen” (Jude 25).
