This study is the result of research carried out in the context of
my ERC Starting Grant project Relocated Remembrance: The Great
Famine in Irish (Diaspora) Fiction, 1847–1921 (GA 262898). I am
very grateful to the European Research Council for the funding that
I received, which made it possible to consolidate a research team and
to examine vast resources of underexplored Famine fiction in pro-
found detail.
This book would not have been realized without the support of
various colleagues over the years. I would like to thank several col-
leagues from Radboud University: Christopher Cusack, Lindsay
Janssen, and Ruud van den Beuken for the successful and pleasurable
teamwork and their feedback on parts of the manuscript and Liedeke
