Th e editors would like to thank all of the contributors; given competing
priorities and deadlines we are truly grateful for having been on the ‘to-
do list’ of so many busy people and for the excellent chapters produced
by them all for this book. Th anks also to Palgrave Macmillan, especially
Julia Willan who was with us from the beginning, Harriet Barker and,
last but not least, Dominic Walker who took over the baton for the fi nal
leg and was especially patient. Th e impetus for this book came out of a
need for teaching material on this topic, as well as through discussions
with other academics at conferences about religion being ‘criminology’s
forgotten variable’. At a time when religion is under the media spotlight
for religiously motivated hate crimes, terrorism and child abuse, provid-
ing the platform for academic debate was a personal mission for both of
us—we hope this book does this.
