Advances in Risk Based Technology
Recent decades have seen an increased attention towards ‘risk-based technology’
by reliability and safety practitioners from industries like nuclear, defence, aero-
space,oilandgasandchemical.Efficientdataloggingandtrendanalysistoolshave
helpedinraisingtheconfidenceofrisk-basedapproachestowardsdesign,operation
and maintenance of engineering systems in safety-critical industries. Economics
also proceeds hand in hand with safety, which directs the research as well as
academiatoworkonnewandimprovedmodelsandmethodsbasedonrisk-based/
risk-informedapproachalongwithdeterministicinsightsfordecision-making.This
providesaholisticframeworkforaddressingtheissuesrelatedtoreliability,quality,
safety and economics in a sustainable manner.
Withtheadvancementoftechnology,reliabilityandriskpractitionersarefacing
freshchallengestoadapttheexistingmodellingframework,especiallyinthefields
of digital systems, human reliability, structural reliability, etc. The focus on
researchanddevelopmentnotonlyislimitedtotherealisticestimationofreliability,
but also extends to understanding the failure mechanisms, dynamically changing
failure modes of advanced intelligent systems, developing suitable models based
on advanced computational techniques, etc. Considering the changing scenarios,
the field of risk and reliability needs to cater to future requirements of the
sustainable systems.
Thisbookisacompilationoffull-lengthpaperpresentedduringtheproceedings
of the International Conference on Reliability, Safety and Hazard 2019
(ICRESH-2019) held during 11–13 January 2019, at IIT Madras, Chennai, orga-
nizedbyBhabhaAtomicResearchCentre(BARC),IndianInstituteofTechnology
Madras (IITM), Society for Reliability and Safety (SRESA) and Centre for
Advanced Life Cycle Engineering (CALCE). The primary focus of the conference
was to discuss the research and development work being performed in research
organizations, academic institutes and industries and chart out the road map for
futuredirectionsinrisk-basedassetmanagementofengineeringsystems.Thetopics

coveredincludeprobabilisticsafetyassessment,digitalsystemreliability,structural
reliability, RAMS (reliability, availability, maintainability, safety),failure analysis,
human reliability, nuclear safety and risk-based methods.
The conference attracted 170 registrants from five countries (India, USA, UK,
Germany and France). The conference, which spanned for 3 days, had 16 keynote
speakers, delivering expert talks on topics ranging from electronic reliability,
material reliability, structural reliability, human reliability, etc. There were around
100 papers delivered in four parallel sessions. The conference was sponsored by
several agencies such as Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences, Heavy Water
Board, Electronics Corporation of India Ltd., Atomic Energy Regulatory Board,
BoardofResearchinIsotopeTechnologyandDefenceResearchandDevelopment
Organisation.Springerprovidedthesupportintheformofmeritprizesforthebest
paperspresentedattheconferenceandisproudtobeassociatedinbringingoutthis
book.
Thepapersincludedinthisbookhavebeenpeer-reviewedbythedomainexperts
to ensure the quality and correctness of the technical content. ICRESH-2019
TechnicalCommitteeandeditorsappreciateandthanktheauthorsfortheirsupport
duringthereviewprocess. Looking atthespectrum ofapplicationdomaincovered
in the conference, this book will serve as ‘one-stop reference’ for applying the
reliability and risk-based technologies in power and process industries.
This conference with a theme ‘risk-based technology’ provided a platform for
practising scientists and engineers to disseminate their knowledge and learn from
other’s experience. We hope this tradition will continue to play a key role in
advancing knowledge on the development and application of risk-based engineer-
ing approach to complex systems.
