Preface
In the present era of industrial growth, maintaining optimal efficiency with minimum
hazards is challenging. To address this issue, reliability technology can play an impor-
tant role. Reliability is measured as the ability of a system to successfully perform its
intended function for a specified period under predetermined conditions. This attribute
has far-reaching consequences on the durability, availability, and lifecycle cost of a prod-
uct or system and is of great importance to the end user/engineer. However, failure is an
inevitable aspect of products and systems. These failures may be the result of human
error, poor maintenance, or inadequate testing and inspection. To improve system reli-
ability and availability, the implementation of appropriate maintenance strategies plays
an important role. Consistently good performance of these units can be achieved with
highly reliable subunits and perfect maintenance. To this effect, the knowledge of the
behavior of a system and their component(s) is required in order to plan and adapt suit-
able maintenance strategies. Therefore, in recent years, the importance of reliability
and maintenance theory has been increasing greatly, especially with the innovations
in recent technology for the purpose of making good products with high quality and
designing highly reliable systems. Reliability management and engineering is one of
the hot topics not only for scientists and researchers but also for engineers and indus-
trial managers. Through this book, titled Reliability Management and Engineering:
Challenges and Future Trends, engineers will be able gain adequate knowledge on this
subject, and this book will aid them in their reliability courses. This book covers the
recent developments in reliability and maintenance engineering and is meant for those
who to take reliability and maintenance as a subject of study. It presents new theoretical
concepts that were not previously published as well as solutions to practical problems
and case studies illustrating the applications methodology. This book is written by a
