At UCSB I have had the pleasure of working with an exceptionally 
talented group of people. The work produced in this thesis is in no small part 
a result of the comprehensive knowledge and assistance they provided. 
First I would like to thank the faculty who offered their support and 
guidance by serving on my committee: Noel MacDonald, Kimberly Turner, 
David Clarke, and Fred Lange. 
I would like to acknowledge my advisor, Noel MacDonald, who made 
sure to allow for sufficient freedom of exploration within the bounds of his 
academic guidance, and who must be credited with assembling a fantastic 
research group. Masa Rao provided a model of what a post‐doc should be, 
providing help at a moment’s notice and never withholding valuable insight 
on how to achieve a PhD. I will miss the scholarly scientific activities fostered 
by Garret Cole and Seth Boeshore, such as throwing objects into the ceiling 
fan,  an  activity  resulting  in  hours  of  fun  scholarship.  And  I  will  fondly 
remember coffee breaks with Emily Parker, who was never reluctant to offer 
encouragement as well as advice. I would also like to thank Shane Todd, 
Payam Bozorgi, Trent Huang, Chansong Ding, Marco Aimi, Lori Callaghan, 
Dave Follman, Yanting Zhang, Marcus Ward, Adam Pyzyna, Zuruzi Abu

everything  running  smoothly,  and  who  was  a  valuable  resource  for

I  would  also  like  to  thank  the  Turner  group,  starting  with  my 
committee  member  Kim  Turner,  for  allowing  me  to  be  a  stand‐in  group 
member on occasion, and for her valuable advice. Kari Lukes and Benedikt 
Zeyen were ideal officemates, always willing to shoot the breeze or discuss 
more pertinent topics when necessary. I will miss coffee breaks with Kari, 
Barry Demartini, Laura Oropeza, and Chris Burgner in the picturesque KITP. 
I would like to thank my committee members David Clarke and Fred 
Lange for their valuable insight into the oxidation process and associated 
phenomena. I was very fortunate to have their unique perspectives to guide a 
large portion of this work. 
The  UCSB  Nanofabrication  facility  staff  has  been  crucial  to  this 
microfabrication effort; I am always impressed with the priority they give 
graduate  student  projects  and  the  promptness  with  which  they  address

that  was  not  my  own,  and  in  doing  so  aided  my  research  effort

  Without the constant and continuing support of my parents, Joe and

Microfabricated Structures and Devices Featuring 
Nanostructured Titania Thin Films

When  titanium  reacts  with  hydrogen  peroxide  at  80°C  –  100°C,  a 
nanostructured titania (NST) thin film is formed on the titanium surface. This 
nanostructured film is particularly suited for integration with thin film and 
bulk microfabrication techniques. 
The  ability  to  manufacture  devices  in  a  batch  format  is  a  principal 
advantage of microfabrication‐based production. To reliably produce arrays 
of micro‐patterned NST thin films on the wafer scale, a patterning guideline 
must be considered. The formation of NST relies on a re‐deposition process; 
adequate  ti‐peroxo  species  must  be  generated  and  remain  at  the  solid‐
solution interface. Numerical analysis of the characteristic transient diffusion 
behavior for various micro‐patterns has been compared with experimental 
data to generate a criterion to guide the design of NST micro‐patterns.

Wafer scale arrays of NST micro gas‐sensors have been fabricated using 
standard thin film techniques. Sensing elements are 20 μm on a side. High 
sensitivity  to  hydrogen  is  achieved  by  modification  of  the  sensors  with 
platinum  nanoparticles.  When  exposed  to  a  10  mT  partial  pressure  of 
hydrogen at 250°C, the functionalized devices exhibit more than one order of 
magnitude resistance decrease with a response time of approximately 7 sec. 
Titanium microstructures formed using the titanium ICP deep etch (TIDE) 
process  have  been  integrated  with  NST  films  to  produce  an  ordered 
nanostructure‐microstructure  composite  (3D‐NST).  The  process  developed 
allows  for  the  incorporation  of  a  planar  top  surface,  advantageous  for 
bonding and sealing applications, in which the nanostructured thin film is 
formed only on feature sidewalls and floors. When titanium microstructures 
are  spaced  less  than  1  μm  apart,  titania  nanostructures  bridge  adjacent 
features. 
NST and 3D‐NST structures have been assembled and tested in a dye‐
sensitized solar cell (DSSC) device. The NST film is approximately 900 nm 
thick; this yielded a DSSC with an efficiency of 1.8%, similar to sol‐gel based 
cells  of  equivalent  thickness.  The  3D‐NST  structure,  which  facilitates 
increased light harvesting efficiency, was also tested in a DSSC format.

An advanced wicking structure has been proposed, based on 3D‐NST 
technology. The 3D‐NST structure acts as a super hydrophilic wick with no 
metastable non‐wetting condition. This type of structure has applications in 
future microfluidic devices.
