Key elements of the methodology
• Covers AM0041 which may be withdrawn once NM0341 is approved
– Last revision of AM0041: Nov 2006
– Projects registered: 2 projects / 242,943 CERs/yr
– Projects in the pipeline: 1 project / 451,000 CERs/yr
• The baseline scenario is identified and additionality is demonstrated using
the combined tool
• Baseline emissions are calculated based on AM0041:
– Establish the baseline regression equation:
• Emission factor (t CH4 / t charcoal) = f (gravimetric yield,
t charcoal / t of biomass)
– Determine the baseline gravimetric yield:
• Sampling according to the sampling standard

– CH4 emissions from batches unsuccessfully abated

Baseline scenario:
• Servers in the data centre are always on, ready for receiving
transaction workload

Project activity:
• A Dynamic Power Management system which:
– monitors the workload of each and all servers;
– directs workload transactions to specific servers;
– switches off unneeded servers, and back on when needed.

Key elements of the methodology (2)
• Applicability criteria:
– Only applicable to existing data centres and existing servers
– No manual server operation adjustment in the past
• Additionality is demonstrated using the combined tool
• Baseline emissions are determined through the following steps:
– Measure ex-post the time each server is turned off
– Multiply the baseline power consumption in idle mode with the
”off” hours under the project
– Conservative accounting for electricity required for cooling

Key elements of the methodology (3)
• Safeguards included in the methodology:
– Limiting of the total amount of “off” hours eligible in the baseline,
based on pre-project evaluation
– Not accounting for “off” hours that do not occur due to the
dynamic power management
– Verifying, based on historical data, that pre-project situation
indeed has no manual server turn-offs
– Re-evaluating a server’s expected power consumption
whenever it is upgraded or replaced
– Adjusting the emission reductions for the market penetration of
the technology, due to the fast-changing nature of the IT sector
