The UPCSA Presbytery of Zimbabwe has prioritized Evangelism and Church Growth, it has also had the highest number of Evangelist appointed in congregations for the purpose of Church Growth in the entire UPCSA. This in itself must guarantee the growth of the church. But sadly, the worrisome fact is that the church is not growing it is actually declining both in membership and congregations. If this office of the Evangelist is there for Church growth, then why is there no growth taking place, why do over 50% of the Evangelist fail to sustain their ministry and walk away and why the Pastor is receiving better training and is elevated above the Evangelist? Hence, the need to redefine the Office of the Evangelist so as making it a very effective instrument of church growth. Through literature review, personal interviews and the use of the church's primary texts it is very clear that both the ministry of the Pastor and of the Evangelist springs out of the office of the Elder and both are offices of service. Then, they should relate to one another equally, each having its own sphere of activities and duties. The Evangelist must be considered a minister of word and sacrament just as much as the Pastor is, he must also be considered a gift to the church that it cannot do without and a co-worker of the Pastor for the purpose of equipping the saints. With this contextual and theological understanding of the office of the Evangelist, coupled with adequate training in his line of work the church is well able to employ it in a manner that facilitates growth.
