Preface
International Meeting on Energy Storage Devices (IMESD)-2018 and
Industry-Academia Conclave were convened by Prof. Yogesh Sharma at Indian
Institute of Technology Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India, during December 10–12,
2018. IMESD-2018 was a debut event in this international meeting series, which
was considered a milestone event in India for communities working in the field of
energy storage devices. About 300 papers covering broad areas of solid-state
ionics/nanoionics, rechargeable secondary batteries, particularly Li-ion, Na-ion
batteries, supercapacitor/flexible supercapacitor/hybrid supercapacitor, nanostruc-
tured energy storage materials. synthesis, characterization and applications,
electrode/electrolyte interface and associated phenomenon, fast ionic conductors:
liquids, polymer, gel and solid electrolytes, modeling and simulation of energy
storage devices, safety, reliability, cell design engineering, fuel cell and technolo-
gies and hydrogen storage devices were received and presented. This book is a
compendium of selected papers presented at the conference and conclave.
Participants from fourteen countries had discussed the issues related to role of
energystoragedevicestoreducethecarbonfootprinttosavetheplanetinthelineof
ParisAgreement.Eminentscientistandfounderofmanycompanies,co-inventorof
many materials being used in commercialized battery system, Prof. Arumugam
Manthiram from University of Texas at Austin, a well-known researcher,
authored/co-authored more than 800 research articles emphasized on the need of
efficient trained manpower to deal with the development of indigenous battery
technology. During a popular lecture by Prof. Vijaya Mohanan K. Pillai, a poli-
cymaker, adviser and outstanding scientist (former director of CSIR-CECRI and
NCL, Pune) suggested an urgent need for development of affordable material and
energy storage technologies to support our electric vehicle program of
self-sustainable growth of whole world.
Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala (Bhatnagar awardee and Padamshree from IIT
Madras, leading researcher/entrepreneur/administrator and advisors to many
ministries/organizationsandaleadingpersontomakethiselectricmobilityprogram
ofGovt.ofIndiasuccessful,emphasizedontheneedofdevelopingrobustcharging
platform and battery recycling technologies of battery material along with

indigenous development of secondary batteries specifically for EV application.
During discussion/deliberation at Meeting and Conclave, most of the
companies/industries working in the area of storage devices such as Amar Raja
Batteries Ltd. TVS Motors, XNRGI (Exponential Energy), USA, BHEL,
BEL MNRE, DRDO have shown keen interest to participate in energy storage
program/facility at IIT Roorkee.

About the Editors
Yogesh Sharma is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics, Indian
InstituteofTechnology(IIT),Roorkee.HepursuedhisM.Tech.andPh.D.fromIIT
Roorkee and the National University of Singapore, respectively. His areas of
research interest lie in experimental condensed matter physics with special rele-
vancetoenergystorage.Hehasauthoredmorethan45research articles inreputed
journals and is a member of many professional societies, including the
Electrochemical Society (USA), Material Research Society Singapore and the
Indian Physics Association.
Ghanshyam Das Varma is a Professor in the Department of Physics, Indian
Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee. He pursued his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from
BanarasHinduUniversity(BHU).Hehasextensiveresearchexperienceinthearea
of experimental condensed matter physics, centring on the synthesis and structural
characterization of high temperature superconductors, colossal magnetoresistive
materials and carbon nanotubes. He has authored more than 60 research articles in
reputed journals.
Amartya Mukhopadhyay is an Associate Professor in the Department of
Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science, IIT Bombay. He has done his
M.Tech. and Ph.D. from IIT Kanpur and the University of Oxford, UK, respec-
tively. His areas of research interest include materials for electrochemical energy
storage and advanced structural ceramics/composites. He has authored 4 book
chapters and more than 70 research papers in reputed journals, as well as holds 3
patents.
Venkataraman Thangadurai is a Professor and Associate Head in the
DepartmentofChemistry,FacultyofScienceintheUniversityofCalgary,Canada,
and the Associate Director of Calgary Advanced Energy Storage & Conversion
Research – Technology. He pursued his Master’s and Ph.D. from Muthurangam
Government Arts College (University of Madras), India and Indian Institute of
Science, Bangalore, India respectively. His research interests are in the area of

solid-state ionic technologies, and in particular, materials development for energy
conversion, storage and environmental applications. He has been the recipient
of the Keith Laidler Award by the Canadian Society for Chemistry and the
Outstanding Invention of 2013 by the University of Maryland, USA. He holds 4
patents and has authored more than 130 research papers in reputed journals and 2
book chapters.
