annualnativetosouthernandcentralEurope,northernAfrica,andregions
of the Caucasus and Iran (Johnston I960). In the United States, U.
europaeumhasbecomesporadicallynaturalizedalongroadsidesandinwaste
placesfromNewJerseytotheCarolinas, southwardtoFlorida,andwest-
wardtoTexasandCalifornia(Small 1903;Radfordctal. 1968;Corrclland
Johnston 1970;Fcrnald 1970;Munz I968).Thesinglehistoricalrecordof
the species fromTexas was a 19th century collection from Hays County
(San Marcosand vicinity, Spring 1897, Stanfields.n. (NY)).
Inthefallof1989andsummerof1990,H. europaeumwascollectedat
threeseparatelocationsinandaroundSanMarcos,Texas.Twoofthecollec-
tion sitesweregravel terracesoftheBlancoRiver, wherethespecieswas
locallyabundantandgrowinginassociationwithPolanisiadodecandra(L.)
DC.,SesbaniamacrocarpaMuhl.exRaf.,EuphorbiaserpensKunth,E. nutans

Heliotwpium eurnpaemn is readily distinguished from all other Texas
species ofHelwtropium by its nutlets, which are typically 4 in number,
1.5—2 —mm long and distinctly tuberculate on the abaxial
