Preface
We describeinthisbook,recentadvancesonhybridintelligentsystemsusingsoft
computingtechniquesforintelligentcontrolandrobotics,patternrecognition,time
seriespredictionandoptimizationcomplexproblems.SoftComputing(SC)consists
ofseveralintelligentcomputingparadigms,includingfuzzylogic,neuralnetworks,
and bio-inspiredoptimizationalgorithms, which can be used to producepowerful
hybridintelligentsystems.Thebookisorganizedinfivemainparts,whichcontain
a group of papers around a similar subject. The first part consists of papers with
the main theme of hybrid intelligent systems for control and robotics, which are
basicallypapersthatproposenewmodelsandconcepts,whichcanbethebasisfor
achievingintelligentcontrolandmobilerobotics.Thesecondpartcontainspapers
withthemainthemeofhybridintelligentsystemsforpatternrecognitionandtime
seriesprediction,whicharebasicallypapersusingnature-inspiredtechniques,like
evolutionary algorithms, fuzzy logic and neural networks, for achieving efficient
patternrecognitionortimeseriesprediction.Thethirdpartcontainspaperswiththe
themeof bio-inspiredandgenetic optimizationmethods,which basicallyconsider
theproposalofnewmethodsandapplicationsofbio-inspiredoptimizationtosolve
complexoptimizationproblems.Thefourthpartcontainspapersthatdealwiththe
applicationofintelligentoptimizationtechniquesinrealworldproblems.Thefifth
partcontainspaperswiththethemeofevolutionarymethodsandintelligentcomput-
ing,whicharepapersconsideringsoftcomputingmethodsforapplicationsrelated
to diverse areas, such as naturallanguageprocessing,recommendingsystems and
optimization.
In thepartofhybridintelligentsystemsforcontrolandroboticsthereare8 pa-
pers that describe different contributions that propose new models and concepts,
whichcanbe theconsideredasthe basisforachievingintelligentcontrolandmo-
bile roboticsfor real world problems. In the partof hybridintelligentsystems for
pattern recognitionand time series predictionthere are 9 papersthat describe dif-
ferentcontributionsonachievingefficientpatternrecognitionandaccuratetimese-
riespredictionusinghybridintelligentsystemsbasedonsoftcomputingtechniques.
In the part of bio-inspired and genetic optimization methods there are 9 papers
that describe different contributions of new algorithms for optimization and their

applicationtodiversecomplexoptimizationproblems.Thebio-inspiredmethodsin-
cludevariationsofantcolonyoptimizationandparticleswarmoptimization.Inthe
partofintelligentoptimizationapplications,thereare7contributionsthatdescribe
the developmentof new models and algorithms relevant to complex optimization
problems,aswellastheapplicationoftheseintelligentoptimizationtechniquesin
real-world applications. In the part of evolutionary methods and intelligent com-
putingthereare9contributionsonmodelsandalgorithmsbasedoncomputational
intelligenttechniques,includingnovelevolutionaryapproaches,thatarepresented,
aswellastheirapplicationstodifferentreal-worldproblems.
In conclusion, the edited book comprises papers on diverse aspects of bio-
inspiredmodels,softcomputingandhybridintelligentsystemsforcontrol,mobile
robotics, pattern recognition, time series prediction and other complex real world
problems.Therearetheoreticalaspectsaswellasapplicationpapers.
