Preface
My interests in the American West and in literary naturalism have certain biographical antecedents. I grew up in a military family and in a cold war climate saturated in 
the ideology and the ethics of an idealized West. But my father's tales of "Air Cav" adventures and the atmosphere of military bravado that prevailed on the bases 
where we lived stood in marked contrast to the regimented order of landscapes dominated by barracks, guard posts, drill fields, and hangars.. This contrast 
constituted, perhaps, a preview of the dichotomies between Western romanticism and naturalism that I write about in this book.
Another, later phase of my life might also have fostered this interest. I went to high school in northern California and to college in Paris. I was in the French capital 
during the spring of 1968, when student and labor movements joined forces in a memorable uprising. Poststructuralism and postmodernism, which offered theoretical 
frameworks for the Parisian movements, soon found their way across the Atlantic and across America to the rebellious regions of California, where they collided 
head­on with the romanticisms of what Thomas Pynchon calls "the olden hippy days."
This familiar collision between Western romanticism of the sixties and a French paradigm skeptical of claims to innocence, originality, and autonomy alerted me, 
perhaps, to the earlier clash of Western romanticism with French naturalism. The naturalism of the 1890s, like poststructuralism in the 1960s and 1970s, served notice 
that no place—no single city, state, or country—could be a simple source of freedom or of new beginnings. Rather than inviting inspiration and regeneration, 
California, no less than France, came to be understood in both genera­

tions as the locus of seemingly ineluctable repetitions—of political, commercial, and artistic tendencies that went a long way to shape the person as well as the culture.
My hope is that by elucidating the earlier collision—when the apparently ineradicable American myth was doused in the cold waters of Gallic critical theory—I can 
help clarify some of our contemporary confusions and accommodations.
Some sections of the book have been published previously in different form. An earlier version of the discussion of Daniel Boone in chapter 1 appeared as "The 
Fictions of Daniel Boone," in Eric Heyne's collection Desert, Garden, Margin, Range: Literature on the American Frontier. The analysis of Frank Norris's short 
stories in chapter 5 had an earlier avatar as "'Life' and 'Literature' in Frank Norris's Cowboy Tales," published in Prairie Winds. Sections of the discussions of 
Norris's naturalism appeared in "Placing Source in Greed and McTeague" in Intertextuality in Literature and Film: Selected Papers from the 13th Florida State 
University Conference on Literature and Film, edited by Elaine D. Cancalon and Antoine Spacagna; and in ''Naturalism in the Cinema: Erich von Stroheim's 
Reading of McTeague" in Frank Norris Studies.
I would like to thank many other people who have helped in the production of Recalling the Wild. The book would not have been possible without the guidance, in its 
first stages, of Josephine Hendin at New York University. Her intelligence and wit in reading the dynamics of American literary history and culture, not to mention her

Manganaro, a fellow aficionado of the American West, were influential in my thinking about Edward S. Curtis as an ethnographer and about certain perspectives of 
twentieth­century Western historiography. Bruce Robbins, ever a source of innovative thought on narratives of nationalism, gave the manuscript much valued support.

Introduction
The elimination of the frontier as a category in the U.S. Census of 1890 signaled the government's official position that this public domain had come to its end. The 
closing of the frontier had, of course, been imagined in American literary, historical, and political commentary for several generations; but with the deletion of the 
Census category, it appeared to have become an actual condition. Whether or not, in view of the West's remaining unsettled space, the Census office's decision was 
justified, the frontier's status as a romantic geography gained new dimensions as its location in space came to be substituted by location in the imagination. Writers and 
artists across the social spectrum found in the topic of the vanished "wilderness" an opportunity to memorialize the open­endedness, the sense of possibility of what 
was now regarded as a storied zone of adventure. More than just the setting for heroic acts of exploration and settlement, the topography of the American West 
gained the status of an agent in a conglomerate epic of national origins.
Parallel to these artistic visions, and often contained in them, a rival motif of closure emerged as a means to represent the historical shift and its consequences for 
regional culture. These accounts and images portrayed the frontier as giving way to what was construed as the irresistible engine of progress and saw the wilderness as 
productive of unadapted, and necessarily vanishing, forms. Recalling the Wild attempts to track the relationships between these two modes of thinking about the 
West in imaginative and documentary works of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The generic designations I have chosen to frame the discussion are 
naturalism and romanticism,
