CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. The Module Description
This module deals with the tips to improve students’ English competence
especially for the sake of increasing the score of Reading Comprehension
section on TOEIC. The module is performed in four kinds of directions in
terms of: 1) Understanding the test format of the Reading Comprehension
section, 2) Understanding the lay-out of various kinds of texts/reading
materials, 3) Understanding on the reading technical potentially applied in
doing the test such as speed reading, skimming and scanning 4) Practice
with time controlled on doing the Reading Comprehension test section.
B. The Prerequisites
To learn this module, no qualification on students is needed. Otherwise, in
every learning activity, the fourth directions are strongly suggested to be
learned spatially and systematically making the learning out-comes more
accurate.
C. The Module Instructions
In order that the module is learned effectively, students need to be aware
of the following details action:
a. The Steps Learning the Module
1. Students would rather be better to be familiar first with the test
format that is used in Reading Comprehension section of
TOEIC. By knowing the entire of the test format then they know
the characteristics of the test. For examples: the most frequently
used kind of questions, the number of options provided, time

allotted for each number of test item, the most commonly trap
used in the test and so on.
2. Students need to study various kinds of reading texts which are
frequently used in Reading Comprehension. By knowing the
most frequently reading texts used in the test, then the students
are able to select reading text/materials out from the test such
office documents, magazine, newspapers, etc. By doing this the
students are well trained to choose and select a more varitype of
reading texts where out of the test the number is unlimited.
3. Students would rather be better to know first the variety of
reading techniques such as skimming, scanning, speed reading,
and so on. By implementing those such a reading techniques, it
is expected that the acceleration of reading skills acquisition
among the participants are getting better so that the score
increase in Reading Comprehension section is getting better too
.
4. In every chance on doing the test, the students are suggested
to:
a) Do the test by themselves without looking over the
answer key at the end of each learning activity in this
module,
b) To consult with the answer key is done when it is
needed, when unclear comprehension happens, but it is
always done after the test, through these following
steps:
When the answer is already correct, look at the

explanations for reconfirmation,
When the answer is incorrect, try to look over the

answer key carefully again to detect why and what
things may cause a mistake,
When the detection on why and what things may

cause a mistake fails, try to study the explanations
at the back part of each learning activity,

When the study on the explanations is

unsuccessful, consult with your trainer/facilitator.
c) Do the steps on doing the test consistently to make the
effectiveness of skills reading acquisition is measurable
by substantially and timely.
5. Do not draw or write anything on the test book or the answer
sheet in order that the testing practice is repeatable more than
once. For the last testing practice, please be sure that you
comprehend the text, the questions and the explanations
competently.
6. It is strongly suggested to gather discussion with the training
mates to have more practical explanations.
b. The Necessitate Learning Equipments
To work with this module, students need the module and the writing
tools (pencil and eraser), do not use pen/marker to assure that the test
book is re-useable for continual incoming testing practice.
c. The Role of the Trainer/Facilitator
1. Trainer/facilitator guides the students to learn the materials
spatially and systematically,
2. Trainer/facilitator directs the students to work in class
cooperatively one to another,
3. Trainer/facilitator lead the students’ learning independently,
4. Trainer/facilitator controls the test practice equated with the time
allotted in doing the Reading Comprehension test.
D. The Learning Purposes
Fundamentally, the purpose of learning this module is to increase the
students’ score of TOEIC on Reading Comprehension section through:
1) The students are familiar with the test format of Reading
Comprehension in TOEIC,

2) The students are familiar with the lay-out many kinds of reading texts,
3) The students are able to operate the kinds of reading techniques well,

Reading Comprehension.

A. Learning Activity 1
Understanding the reading Comprehension Test in TOEIC
1. Learning Objectives
The objective of the learning activity in this part is to demonstrate the students
with the test format of reading comprehension in TOEIC.
2. Learning Activities
Learning Material 1
Part VII of the TOEIC test contains different types of reading materials. These
reading are the kind you would find easily during the moments of normal day
in an English speaking environment.
Each reading passage is followed by two to five questions. There are 40
multiple choice questions in Part VII. You must find the best choice marked
(A), (B), (C), or (D), and mark the correct answer on the answer sheet. Your
time is only 30 seconds per question.
There are basically two types of questions in Reading Comprehension
section. These are based on what is stated (Main idea and Factual
questions), and what is implied (Inferential and Purpose questions)

Here, in order to become familiar with the test format of reading
comprehension in TOEIC, you need to do the following test samples
individually. There are several samples of texts and questions in this part.
They are based on a selection of reading materials, such as notices, letters,
forms, newspaper and magazine articles, and advertisements. Each text is
followed by two or ore questions. Here are some for you to try:
