holotype.
KAuP(1868) described E1・1ocnemlsmniszechi fromNias,Sumatra. Afterwards,
HELLER(1900)gavethereplacementnameGnapha1ocnemlstothepassalidgenusE1・10-
c'1emlsKAuP, 1868,becausethegenericnameEriocnemlshadbeenpreoccupiedby
the hummingbird genus E1'leone'nls REIcHENBAcH, 1853. Subsequently, GRAVELY
(1914)regardedthetaxonmnlszechiasajuniorsynonymofGnapha1ocnenust1・idens
(WIEDEMANN,1823) fromJava.Furthermore, inhisrevisional workon thePassalidae
of theworld,GRAVELY (1918) regarded thegenus Gnapha1ocnemlsasajunior syn-
onymofthegenusPe1opldesKUwERT,1896.
When wehadanopportunity toexamine theholotypeofEriocnemlsmnlszechi
preservedinthecollectionoftheHessischerLandesmuseum,Darmstadt,wefoundit
specifically distinct fromJavanesespecimensofPe1opidestrldens insomeexternal
characters.Thus,weregardthetaxonmnlszechiasavalidspeciesofthegenusPe1op1-
des.Weherewith redescribePe1oplses1nnlszechi basedon theholotype for external
morphology. Inaddition,wealsodescribethemalegenitaliaofRmnlszech1basedona
specimenfromWestSumatrainthefirstauthors' collection.
Inthefollowingdescription,weadopttheterminologyofGRAVELY(1914) forex-
ternalmorphologyandofLINDRoTH(l957) formalegenitalia.ExplanatorySEMpho-
tographsarealsoprovided forPe1opldesmniszech1andPtrldensbasedonspecimens

ridgeindistalportion,vanishedincentralportion;depressedareawrinkled;canthus
roundedatanteriorangle;eyelarge,extendingbeyonddistalendofcanthus.Anterior
lowertoothofleftmandible1ocatedclosetolowestterminaltooth,smallerthanthelat_
ter;uppertoothofleftmandibledistinct,obtuse-angled;uppermarginofleftmandible
weaklyconvexbehindupper tooth; outerbasalangleofleftmandiblelocatednear
base, strongly produced outwards and a little forwards; latero-ventra1side of Ie量
mandiblestronglyhollowednearbase;anterior lowertoothofrightmandibleabsent;
lowestterminal toothofrightmandiblemuchlarger thanthele量one;upper toothof

6short lamellae.Prementumdepressedand rough in centralportion, withmedian
ridge inanterior portion,strongly swollen inpostero-latera1portion. Mentum with
setiferouspuncturesinlateralportion,impunctateandhairlessincentralportion;scar
obliquely oval; anterior marginalmoststraight incentral portion; posteriormargin
straight.Hypostoma1processimpunctate,hairless,smooth;innermarginslightlycon-
vex;outermarginwithobtuseangleinanteriorportion.
Pronotum with distinct median sulcus, rough in lateral scar and in marginal
groove.Posteriorplateofprosternumimpunctateandhairless.Mesosternumimpunc-
tateandhairless,withshallowscar;mesothoracicepisternumhairyinposteriorcorner.
Lateralandanterior intermediateareasofmetasternumdenselypuncturedandhairy;
posterior intermediateareaimpunctateandhairless,withirregulardentsalongposte-
riormarginofcentralarea; ridgeseparating intermediateand lateral areasdistinct;
centralareaimpunctateandhairless.
Firsttothirdgroovesofelytronsimplyandfinelypunctured; fourthsimplypunc-
turedinanteriorportion,ladder-likeinposteriorportionclosetoposteriorend;、f量i hto
eighthladder-likealongwholelength;sixthandseventhwider thanfifthandeighth;
ninthfinelypuncturedalongwholelength;sixthtoeighthinterstriaeofelytronthinner

価をおこなった. その結果, Inn,.sechi(KAup)は付節の形態がPtridensとは明確に異なること
から, これを有効な種であるとみなし, ホロタイプにもとづき再記載した.
