About the Team
Paul was introduced to pottery in 1977 whilst living in Durban. After university he became
a service provider to South African potters, initially as a kiln builder. He developed the
popular range now branded as Cobcraft Mate kilns in 1979. Paul met long-standing
friend and collaborator Bruce Walford (already a potter of repute) at this time.
Other milestones in Paul’s pottery-facing career were a move to Cape Town and
the establishment with Bruce of a studio producing high-fired, handmade, reduced
stoneware pots. Paul started Kiln Contracts in 1986 which eventually included kiln
making for craft potters and factories, furnaces for industry, agencies for European high-
tech production equipment, a service division operating across Southern Africa, clay
body making, glaze making and pottery supplies. Paul left in 1994 to live in NZ but Kiln
Contracts remains a thriving business.
In New Zealand Paul established Decopot Limited – specialist bisque suppliers and
contractors. The business has expanded to include clay body, underglaze and glaze
making as well as the elements of Western Potters Supplies and Cobcraft Supplies.
Decopot is a direct importer of raw materials and glaze stains.
Paul now presents glazing workshops around New Zealand where he encourages
attendees to take a fresh, bold approach to glazing.
Kiwa joined the Decopot Team in 2006 and quickly moved up through the ranks. He is
thorough, aware of client preferences and organised. He manages all routine factory
activity involving bisque production, clay body making, warehousing and freight
movements. He is a top bloke and enjoys meeting clients when they visit.
Bruce seems to have finally worked out which side of the Tasman he wants to live and
we are pleased he has chosen our side. He undertakes specialist production projects
and makes sure we keep improving our range of clay bodies. He makes the glazes and
underglazes. As the original developer of Claybright he is definitely well qualified. Expect
to see more of Bruce as he demonstrates his flair for hand-built paperclay sculpture.
Louise has a huge job looking after all administration. She is most often the person who
will take your calls and process your orders. She is not a potter but does a great job with
the crazy glossary of pottery terms. She only works mornings.
Michael joined Decopot in 2001. He makes all the Ram press dies with great skill and
manages the finishing division. It is Michael’s job to ensure that ware for bisque-firing
is completely up to standard – and he does expertly. He helps out in the clay division
when it is under pressure.
Arvind packs and dispatches your orders. He is a former Bhutanese refugee and
originally a farmer. He is multi-lingual and worked as a teacher in the refugee camps.
He is great at his job and we are lucky to have him.
Darwoot was also a refugee but from ethnic cleansing in Burma. He is deaf and mute
but makes up for that with amazing sensitivity for hand-work and a great smile. Darwoot
helps out in several departments including fettling, packing and pugging clay. His sharp
eyesight stands him in good stead in the sorting department.

How we work
The Decopot team is committed to providing you the best pottery materials and the
best service we can. To ensure this we have to focus on our strengths and accept
that we cannot be all things to all people. We have rationalised our range of services
somewhat and no longer stock tools or moulds.
Prices in this price list include GST.
We have a $25 (net value) minimum sale policy.
The 1-tonne clay rate applies to orders of 200kg or more.
Orders can be placed by telephone, email or through the Decopot website.
Payment can be made by Payments can be made by (preferably) internet banking,
credit card or cheque.
Goods will be dispatched as soon as practical after payment is confirmed. We will
consider opening credit accounts for schools, commercial and institutional customers.
This will be at our sole discretion.
Normal delivery times are 2-3 working days after dispatch.
Parcels should be inspected in the presence of the courier or signed for as yet to be
inspected. If parcels are signed for ‘as received in good order’ no claim for possible
breakage will be accepted by the carrier.
In the event of damage you should retain the packaging materials and send us your
claim send us your claim with invoice number, courier ticket number and photographs if
possible WITHIN SEVEN DAYS.
Every effort is made to maintain consistency in materials supplied. In spite of this
there are inevitable variations in raw materials received by us and sometimes they
are discontinued at short notice. It is the responsibility of all potters to test materials
purchased before processing large batches. If you feel the goods are at fault please
contact us immediately and we will do our best to resolve the matter.
We welcome visits to the factory. Please make arrangements in advance especially
if you wish to pick up an order. We often need a day or more to compile orders
depending on stock levels.
