PREFACE

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology enables the unique,
automatic and non-contact identification of objects using radio waves. It is an
exciting, rapid growing, multidisciplinary field with emerging technologies
and applications across multiple economic sectors. As one of key enablers of
ubiquitous computing and Internet of Things (IoTs), RFID systems are being
deployed throughout the world at a staggering rate and impacting peoples’ life
in significant ways. It is estimated that the RFID market will increase from
$6.98 billion in 2012 to $7.88 billion in 2013, and reach $23.4 billion in 2020.
RFID technology has achieved widespread success in a multitude of domains,
ranging from manufacturing, asset tracking, smart home appliances, supply
chain management, retailing, payment systems, to security and access control.
Standards organizations such as International Organization for Standardization
(ISO) and EPC global have made a great effort to specify various applications
and ensure the interoperability of RFID systems around the world during the
past few years. While RFID technology brings unique features and stimulates
innovative applications, there are significant research challenges that need to
be addressed before the widespread adoption of RFID systems.
Significant R&D work has been undertaken over recent years on RFID
systems in both academia and industry, with emphasis on new hardware
design of RFID readers and tags, sophisticated software infrastructures for
supporting IoTs, efficient power harvesting technology, lightweight
cryptographic algorithms and protocols for protecting security and privacy,
sensor embedded RFID technology, leading-edge innovative RFID
applications as well as their business aspects. This book consists of 9 chapters
and aims to bring together RFID researchers and practitioners from academia
and industry to present the state-of-the-art developments, trends, industrial

applications and research challenges related to RFID technology. The first 4
chapters focus on the RFID applications and research tools, whereas the last 5
chapters explore the security and privacy issues in RFID systems. This book
represents a comprehensive and useful reference for recent progress in RFID
technology, applications, security and privacy, which is written for graduate
students, researchers, educators, and engineers working in the field of wireless
networks and mobile communications.
I would like to express our gratitude to the authors of book chapters for
their excellent work, which ensures that this book presents the latest progress
in RFID technology in a timely manner. Special thanks also go to Carra
