Das vorliegende Buch ist aus zehnjähriger Lehrtätigkeit am Institut für Tiefenpsychologie und Psychotherapie an der Universität Wien entstanden. Das Grundkonzept ist einerseits Patienten- (und nicht Theorie- oder Technik-) Zentriertheit, andererseits ein Methodenpluralismus, wie er sich aus dem ersten Prinzip ergibt. Dem Hilfesuchenden sollen jene Methoden angeboten werden, die je nach Persönlichkeit, Krankheit und sozialer Situation in ökonomischer Weise ein optimales Ergebnis erwarten lassen. Als gemeinsame theoretische Basis bleibt jedoch die Psychoanalyse, die nach der Auffassung des Autors unverändert die relativ beste theoretische Basis zum Verstehen und Behandeln darstellt.
