Abstract

Carbon is one of the materials used for layers of diffusion gas or gas diffusion electrode in
PEM FC technology. This technology is designed to make carbon as an electrocatalyst
support platinum Pt / C for PEM FC. The more activated carbon surface area, the active
surface area of Pt / C is also wider. Activated carbon reactor 50-100 mesh granular using
stainless steel heating element to react water vapor with carbon at high temperature. This
technology is able to produce activated carbon with Iodine absorption 1200, methylen blue
absorption 100, active surface area 1500 and 96% active carbon.

1. FIELD OF TECHNOLOGY

Activated carbon reactor 50-100 mesh granular by using stainless steel heating element to
react air vapor with carbon at high temperature. This technology is designed for porous
micro activated carbon with active surface area that can be varied according to step
process step. The technology is capable of producing activated carbon with iodine
absorption rate of 1200, 100 methylene blue absorption, active surface area of 1500 and
96% activated carbon.
2. BACKGROUND OF TECHNOLOGY

Carbon is one of the materials used for layers of diffusion gas or gas diffusion electrode
in PEM FC technology. This technology is designed to make activated carbon 350-400
mesh as platinum support used in electrocatalyst. The more active surface area of carbon
the less carbon is required to support platinum called Pt / C electrocatalyst. The more
activated carbon surface area, the active surface area of Pt / C is also wider. So important
is the role of carbon fuel cell technology so that reactor is needed to produce it. The
demand for activated carbon is increasingly increasing for various commodities,
especially absorbing hazardous chemicals contained in foodstuffs. This reactor is used for
carbon activation learning tools both students and the community before performing a
larger scale.

3. SUMMARY OF TECHNOLOGY /PRINCIPLES OF TECHNOLOGY

The carbon material with granular 50-100 mesh is inserted into the activated carbon
reactor by the bath process. The process of preheating carbon material is carried out to a
temperature of 700 oC. Steam or CO2 enters the Reactor from the bottom. The meeting of
steam or CO and carbon at a temperature of 980° C with reaction time adjusted

according to the steam flow rate or CO .

The activation process using steam will be optimal with residence time in the reactor 20
minutes. Carbon will undergo an activation process characterized by the release of
volatile H2 gas and CO (safety, activation indicator) in the upper chimney equipped with
fire lighter so that the gas is burned.

Carbon activation reaction using steam:

The loss of carbon weight due to this activation reaction is about 25% for 20 minutes in the
form of volatile combustible material.

The activation process using CO is characterized by the release of volatile CO gas. For CO

safety and Activation Indicator, Steam is injected in the upper chimney equipped with fire
batter so that CO gas burns.

The loss of carbon weight due to this activation reaction is about 15% for 20 minutes in the
form of volatile combustible material.

Activated carbon removal from the reactor is cooled. Followed by processing 350-400 mesh
with Disk Mill process unit and dust collector. Activating Carbon Processing into Pt / C
there is a unit of absorption process of Platinum Salt with activated carbon, washing, heating
to form PtO / C, oxidation of carbon to form CO at certain temperature to form Pt / C as

PEM Fuel Cell electrode.
