HowdidtheEarth,Jupiter,theSun,andthewholeSolarSystemform? Thisbasiccuriosity
has been a driver for philosophers, scientists, and astronomers for centuries. Limited to
observations with the naked eye, ancient Greek philosophers commonly argued that the
EarthwasatthecenteroftheUniversewiththeSunandplanetsorbitingaroundher(e.g.,
Aristotle370B.C.;Ptolemei120).
Copernicus(1543)andothersrefocusedourperceptionoftheUniversewiththerealiza-
tionthattheEarthisrevolvingaroundtheSun. Withtheprogressinunderstandingofthe
lawsofgravity,ideasaboutthebeginningsoftheSolarSystemwereontherighttrackwith
theso-called"nebularhypothesis"(Swedenborg1734;Kant1755;Laplace1796).
Theemergenceofmodernastronomywithmoreandmorepowerfulopticaltelescopes
revealedstunningimagesofnebulositiesacrossthesky,themostprominentcataloguedin
Messier catalog. Their nature – are they inside our Galaxy or are they galaxies on their
ownright–wasfamouslydebatedbyHarlowShapleyandHeberCurtisin1920. Thelatter
wasprovenrightasthedistancetotheAndromedagalaxybyOpik(1922)wasmeasuredby
observingitsrotationalmovement. WhenHubble(1929),measureddistancetoevenmore
galaxiesusingtheCepheidmethoddevelopedbyHenriettaLeavitt,dimensionsoftheUni-
versewerepushedalmosttoin￿nity. Notallofthosenebulaearelocatedmillionsoflight
yearsaway.SomeofthebrightmolecularcloudsturnedouttobelocatedinourGalaxy,and
identi￿edasstellarnurseries,suchasOrionMolecularCloud.Thosecloudsaretheprimary
spotstostudythe￿rststagesofstarsandplanetformation.InthedaysofHubbleandLeav-
itt,however,theonlyevidencethatplanetscanbeformedaroundstarswasourownSolar
System.
Endoftwentiethcenturybroughtanewbreakthrough,thediscoveryofplanetsaround
otherstars.Firstplanetwasfoundaroundexoticpulsars(Wolszczan&Frail1992),butsoon
after, planets orbiting much more familiar Sun-like stars were detected (Mayor & Queloz
1995).Asoftoday,thereare4370con￿rmedexoplanetsdetected(afterexoplanet.eudatabase,
asof29thOctober2020;Schneideretal.2011). Withthosenumerousdetectionsitbecame
clearthatmostplanetarysystemsareverydi￿erentfromourown(Madhusudhan2012;Winn
&Fabrycky2015);forexamplecontaininggasgiantsonaverycloseorbit,calledhotJupiters,
orwithmanyrockyplanetsclosertotheirstarthanMercuryistotheSun. Bypushingthe
limits of our understanding of the Universe, new questions arose: What is the origin of
planetarysystemsandtheirdiversity?HowuniqueistheSolarSystem?
AtthecenterofthequestionabouttheoriginofourSolarSystemliestheunderstanding
