Abstract
Inthefieldoffaçadeengineering,structuralsiliconesealantshavebeenusedinadhesively
bondedconnectionssincethe1960s. Thelowstrengthandstiffnessofsiliconerubbercom-
paredtoothertypesofadhesivesarecompensatedbytheexcellentadhesionpropertiesand
thegoodresistanceagainstageingandenvironmentalinfluences,likeUVradiation. Silicone
sealantsshowapronouncednonlinearmaterialbehaviour. Theapplicabledesignconceptsin
civilengineeringproposesimplifieddesignequations,whicharebasedontheassumptionof
alinearmateriallaw. Duetothecurrentstateofknowledgeandtocompensatethesimplified
model assumptions in the design concept, high reduction factors on the material strength
andmanyrestrictionsonapplicationsaredefined. Inordertoovercomethesedrawbacks,
thestressstatewithinthesealantisincreasinglydescribedusingtheFiniteElementMethod.
Consideringtheresultsoftheseanalysis,theassessmentofboththecomplexstressstates
withasuitablefailurecriterionandtheinfluenceofstresssingularitiesonthefailurebehaviour
constituteinevitablequestions.
The present work addresses these two questions. In the first step, the strain magnitude
has been determined as a suitable failure criterion for the defect-free bulk material of the
consideredDowCorning® 993structuralsiliconesealant,subjectedtoaquasi-staticloading.
Thefailurecriterionhasbeencalibratedusingtheresultsofuniaxialtensionaswellascircular
shear tests and validated with the results of compression tests. The strain magnitude is
a strain-based failure criterion, which can be seen as a measure for the distortion of the
molecularchains.
Inasecondstep,thestressdistributionofthesingle-lapshearjointhasbeeninvestigated
in detail. For the assessment of the singular stresses and strains at the edge area of the
interface between the adhesive and the substrate, referred to as two-material wedge, the
so-calledcoupledstressandenergycriterion,aconceptofFiniteFractureMechanics,was
extendedtononlinearelasticmaterialbehaviour. Basedonresultsofconducedsimpleshear
testsonsmallbondedconnectionswithvaryingadhesivethicknessesandoverlaplengths,
the coupled criterion was used to predict the crack initiation loads and a good agreement
withtheexperimentallyrecordedvalueswasobtained. Knowingthestrengthandthecritical
energy release rate of the material, the crack initiation load and the corresponding crack
lengtharedeterminedinthecoupledcriterionbysolvinganoptimisationproblembasedona
FiniteElementAnalysis. Thestresspartialcriterionhasbeenmodifiedtoconsiderthestrain
magnitudeasafailurecriterion. Inordertoanalysetheenergypartialcriterion,thecritical
energyreleaserateofDowCorning® 993structuralsiliconesealanthasbeendeterminedin
DoubleCantileverBeamtestsusingtheevaluationmethodbasedontheJ-integralapproach.
Furthermore,conceptsoftheTheoryofCriticalDistanceswereusedtodeterminethefailure
loadsofthesmallscaletests. Unlikeasforthenotchedcircularsheartestsandthetension
testsonsmallscalebondedconnections,goodpredictionswerefoundintheFiniteElement
Analysisforthesimpleshearspecimens,whenaconstantelementsizeandformulationat
thevicinityofthetwo-materialwedgewereused. Similarresultswereobtainedwiththepoint
method and the control volume approach. These findings indicate that the characteristic

Kurzfassung
Im Bereich Fassadenbau werden Silikone bereits seit den 1960er Jahren in geklebten
lastabtragendenVerbindungeneingesetzt. DieimVergleichzuanderenStrukturklebstoffen
geringeSteifigkeitundFestigkeitwerdendurchdiehervorragendeHafteigenschaftensowie
die gute Alterungs- und Witterungsbeständigkeit ausgeglichen. Silikone zeigen ein stark
nichtlineares Materialverhalten. Das anzuwendende Bemessungskonzept im Bauwesen
schlägtvereinfachteBemessungsformelnvor,dieaufderAnnahmeeineslinearelastischen
Materialverhaltens beruhen. Aufgrund des aktuellen Wissensstands und zur Kompensa-
tion der vereinfachten Modellannahmen bei der Bemessung werden sehr hohe Abmin-
derungsfaktorenaufderMaterialfestigkeitsowieEinschränkungenhinsichtlichderNutzung
vorgeschrieben. UmdieseNachteilezuüberwindenwirddieBeanspruchungdesSilikons
zunehmendmitderFiniteElementeMethodeermittelt. DieBewertungsowohlderkomplexen
SpannungszuständemittelseinesgeeignetenVersagenskriteriumsalsauchderEinflussvon
SingularitätenaufdasVersagensverhaltenstellenhinsichtlichderErgebnisseeinersolchen
BerechnungunausweichlicheFragestellungendar.
Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt diese beiden Fragen. In einem ersten Schritt wurde der
DehnungsbetragalsgeeignetesVersagenskriteriumfürdasdefektfreieGrundmaterialdes
ZweikomponentensilikonklebstoffsDowCorning® 993unterquasistatischenBelastungen
ermittelt. DasVersagenskriteriumwurdeanhandderErgebnissevonuniaxialenZug-sowie
KreisschubversuchenkalibriertundmitdenErgebnissenvonDruckversuchenvalidiert. Der
DehnungsbetragisteindehnungsbasiertesVersagenskriterium,welchesalseinMaßfürdie
VerzerrungderMolekülkettengesehenwerdenkann.
In einem zweiten Schritt wurde die Spannungsverteilung in der einschnittig überlappten
schubbeanspruchtenKlebeverbindungdetailliertuntersucht. ZurBewertungdersingulären
SpannungenundDehnungenimEckbereichderGrenzschichtzwischenFügeteilundKleb-
stoff, der sogenannten Bimaterialkerbe, wurde das gekoppelte Spannungs- und Energie-
kriterium, eine Methode der Finiten Bruchmechanik, auf nichtlinear elastisches Material-
verhaltenerweitert. AufderGrundlagederErgebnissevondurchgeführtenSchubversuchen
ankleinenBauteilprobenmitunterschiedlichenKlebschichtdickenundÜberlappungslängen
wurde die Rissinitiierungslast mithilfe des gekoppelten Kriteriums ermittelt und eine gute
Übereinstimmung mit den experimentellen Daten erzielt. Mit Kenntnis der Festigkeit und
derkritischenEnergiefreisetzungsratedesMaterialswerdenimRahmendesgekoppelten
KriteriumsaufGrundlagevonFiniteElementeBerechnungenineinemOptimierungsproblem
sowohldieRissinitiierungslastalsauchdieentsprechendeRisslängeermittelt. DasSpan-
nungsteilkriteriumwurdedabeiaufeindehnungsbasiertesKriterium,denDehnungsbetrag,
umformuliert. ZurAnwendungdesEnergiekriteriumswurdenDoubleCantileverBeam Ver-
sucheamDowCorning® 993durchgeführtunddiekritischeEnergiefreisetzungsratemitder
J-IntegralMethodeausgewertet. DarüberhinauswurdenMethodenderTheoriederkritischen
DistanzenzurErmittlungderRissinitiierungslastbeidenKleinteilversuchenherangezogen.
AndersalsbeidengekerbtenkreisförmigenSchubprobenunddenZugprobenangeklebten
Verbindungen konnte eine gute Übereinstimmung mit den experimentellen Ergebnissen

beidenSchubversuchenfestgestelltwerden,wenninderFiniteElementeSimulationeine
konstanteElementgrößeundFormulierunggewähltwurden. ÄhnlicheErgebnissewurden
mitderPunktmethodeunddemAnsatzeinesKontrollvolumenserzielt. DieUntersuchungen
zeigen,dassdercharakteristischeLängenparameterkeineMaterialkonstanteist.

Dansledomainedelaconstructiondefaçades,dessiliconesontdéjàétéutiliséscomme
matériau de base pour la réalisation d’assemblages collés depuis les années 1960. La
résistance et la rigidité du silicone sont relativement faibles comparées à d’autres types
d’adhésifs, ce gap de performances étant compensé par une excellente adhésion et une
bonne résistance au vieillissement et aux impacts environnementaux. Le comportement
mécanique du silicone est fortement non linéaire. Les règlements de dimensionnement
en vigueur dans le domaine du génie civil proposent des équations simplifiées, qui sont
baséessurl’hypothèsed’uncomportementlinéairedusilicone. Dufaitdel’étatdel’artactuel,
soitlafaiblecapacitéàprédiredefaçonoptimalelecomportementdecematériauetpour
compenserleshypothèsessimplifiéesquisontàlabaseduconceptdedimensionnement,
desfacteursderéductionélevéssurlarésistancedusiliconeetdesrestrictionsconcernant
sonutilisationsontprescrites. Afindecontournercesdéfauts,l’étudedeladistributiondes
contraintes dans le silicone est de plus en plus faite par la méthode des éléments finis.
Concernantlesrésultatsdessimulationsnumériques,l’évaluationdel’étatdescontraintes
à l’aide d’un critère de rupture approprié et l’analyse de l’influence des singularités sur le
comportementderuptureconstituentdesquestionsincontournables.
Le présent travail traite ces deux questions. Dans une première étape, l’amplitude de la
déformation a été identifiée comme étant un critère de rupture approprié pour la matière
brut et exempt de défauts du silicone structurel Dow Corning® 993 soumis à des charges
statiques. Lecritèrederuptureaétécalibréaveclesrésultatsd’essaissurdeséchantillons
en traction uniaxiale, ainsi que sur des échantillons circulaires en cisaillement et validé à
l’aidedesrésultatssurdesessaisdecompressionsurdeséchantillons. L’amplitudedela
déformationestuncritèrederupturebasésurladéformation,cettedernièreétantconsidérée
commeunemesuredeladistorsiondeschaînespolymères.
Dans une deuxième étape, la distribution des contraintes dans un joint de recouvrement
en cisaillement a été analysée en détail. Pour l’évaluation des contraintes et des défor-
mations présentant un comportement singulier au coin libre de l’interface entre adhésif et
adhérent,appelé«entaillebi-matière»,lecritèrecouplé,conceptdelaméthodeconnuesous
ladésignationanglo-saxonne«FiniteFractureMechanics»,aétéétenduaucomportement
hyperélastique. Surlabasedetestsdecisaillementsurdepetitsassemblagescollésavec
différentes épaisseurs d’adhésif et longueurs de chevauchement, le critère couplé a été
utilisé pour prédire la charge à l’apparition de fissure et un bon accord avec les valeurs
enregistrées lors des tests a été trouvé. Connaissant la résistance et le taux critique de
restitutiond’énergiedelamatière,lachargeàl’apparitiondefissureetlalongueurcorrespon-
dantedelafissureinitiéesontdéterminéesaveclecritèrecoupléenrésolvantunproblème
d’optimisationbasésuruneanalysedesélémentsfinis. Lecritèrepartieldescontraintesa
étémodifiépourconsidérerl’amplitudedeladéformationcommeuncritèrederupture. Afin
d’analyserlecritèrepartielénergétique,letauxcritiquederestitutiond’énergiedusilicone
structurelDowCorning® 993aétédéterminéeparlesessaisdits«DoubleCantileverBeam
test»enutilisantlaméthoded’évaluationbaséesurl’approcheduJ-intégral. Enoutre,des

conceptsdelathéoriedesdistancescritiquesontétéutiliséspourdéterminerlescharges
à l’apparition des fissures pour des essais à petite échelle. Contrairement aux essais sur
deséchantillonscirculairesentaillésencisaillementetauxessaisdetensionsurlesjoints
adhésifs,debonnesprédictionsontététrouvéespourlesspécimensdecisaillement,lorsque
la taille et la formulation des éléments utilisées dans l’analyse par éléments finis ont été
choisies de façon constante à proximité de la singularité. Des résultats similaires ont été
obtenus avec la méthode ponctuelle et l’approche du volume de contrôle. Ces résultats
indiquentquelalongueurcaractéristiquedusiliconen’estpasconstante.
